Jason Chimera to the Sharks

Seems the Caps need to free up a bit of cap space to sign Brouwer. I have no idea if they'd be willing to deal Chimera but assuming he could be had, what would the Caps want?

I assume a pick and/or a prospect.

On the Sharks, Chimera would be a solid dose of speed for the 3rd line and has an expiring contract so the Sharks wouldn't be tied down beyond this year.

As I said in the thread on the Caps board, there's certainly a chance that Chimera (or another winger) gets traded. But the Caps don't need to trade anyone to clear space to sign Brouwer. Poti and Fehr will almost certainly start the season on LTIR, so that's nearly $5M in cap space right there. Any trades will likely happen a bit further down the line, especially once McPhee and Boudreau see what they can get out of guys like Eakin and Sjogren during training camp.

Any trades before then would likely be the result of another team aggressively pursuing a Capitals player, not McPhee shopping them.

Makes sense - wasn't aware of Fehr and Poti's injury status.

A trade might be feasible, but it won't be due to a need to clear cap space. Capgeek is not wrong, but it's misleading because you temporarily have to count Poti and Fehr. They'll be on LTIR when it's possible to put them there. Poti may never play for the Caps again.

Yet could the likes of Ward and Brouwer make Chimera superfluous? Potentially yes. I think the Caps would prefer to get another bottom-six type in exchange, but pick(s) might make sense too.

Even with those LTIRs, still need to sign Alzner and Brouwer.

Going to be a tight fit. Chimera would make the most sense as a cap casualty if they do end up having to cut some salary.

This hurts as a Sharks fan, too. You could have had Ehrhoff, we could have had Chimera.

Instead we got Patrick White and Daniel Rahimi, you got Milan Jurcina and Chris Clark.

I don't want to trade Chimera. He may have hands of stone, but his speed and his work ethic I love. He was a big contributor this past playoffs too. Without Chimera, we would most likely not made it past the Rangers. Well, he is one contributing factors for the 1st round win.

Sharks would do it for Chimera, I bet.

Don't know much about Fehr's game.

I agree. Don't ask him to beat anyone 1-on-1 off the rush but he brings a lot to the table. Unless the Caps do get desperate for cap space -- which it doesn't look like they will -- then I'm all for keeping useful players like Chimmer.

Big guy, pretty soft hands, WHL Goal scorer, doesn't really mind getting in the corners but he doesn't make his living there either, nor does he excessively use his big frame (though he will get in the way of people, just not necessarily bowl them over). I just peg him as a guy with a decent two way game and a nose for the net, though he hasn't exactly panned out as a big goal scorer like the organization must have hoped.

His issue has always been with injuries. I am a big Fehr fan, but after so long with injuries, it is time to move on. His injuries have hampered his development. Right when you think he is ready to set the world on fire, he gets hurt. If he is healthy and gets ice time, he can be a great player. Injuries are an understatement with him.
