Another View of Development Camp

This was a big week for the Rangers–development camp, trades, signings. Let’s get to development camp first. I was there for the scrimmage on two of the days, so I can’t make comments on the play on all days, but I can give some thoughts on what I saw. As respects Tim Erixon, I only [...]

Thanks Leslie. Glad to hear your impression of McIlrath's play echo'd what the other beat-writers were reporting.

Great to hear Yogan is doing well. Seems like he could really have been a diamond in the rough.

Good article, Leslie. Great points regarding Pashnin and Fasth. Very excited for both, especially Fasth, and I hope the Rangers play it right.

Great work as always. Im glad to hear something very good about McIlrath. Although his skill may never warrant a top 10 selection from what I have continuously read, his intimidating presence on the ice goes unmatched.

If Thomas can bulk up I think he has what it takes to be a solid 2nd line 20-25 goal scorer in the NHL.

Pashnin has an interesting case only because of the huge DEPTH on the Rangers defense.

Leslie,
Great read.
Quote:
There never was any question that Yogan had the potential, but he does look like he has begun to do what it will take to make him an NHL player. He did lose a year of development and should return to juniors, but he may wind up being one of the fourth round long-shots that makes it.
Do you have a time frame when you think he will be NHL ready? I always thought he was a long shot to make it, if he makes it in 3 years. But based on this write up, I am wondering if he may be ready in 2?

In the talent evaluation on his HF prospect page, there is this
Quote:
Talent Analysis
Yogan has a big frame and skates well, but lacks the skill to be a top-six forward at the NHL level. A better passer than a shooter, but he chooses to shoot a lot. Work ethic is an issue, as is hockey sense.
I hope this will change.
Thanks as always.

I did not write that talent analysis. Not sure who did.

Yogan was always a skill guy. His problem was always making sure to be a team player. I never saw it as much of a work ethic issue.

It's hard to tell when he will be ready. We will know more after TC and into training camp.

What's Fasth's contract situation like in Sweden?

He has one more year guaranteed and from what he said in his Rangers 20 in 20 he might come over next year, or might stay an extra year so at worst his timetable is either 2012-13 or 2013-14. Both him and Gordie seem to have a very patient attitude about it. Personally, I'd like to see him come over in 2012-13 taking into account no work stoppage.

Yogan seems like he could be a good power guy down the road, kinda like a Byfuglien or when Bates Battaglia/Mike LeClerc had their good years.

I liked the Yogan pick, even more than I liked this year's St Croix pick.

He has the upside to be an NHL player.

Interesting write-up Leslie, thanks. It's good to hear that some of the unheralded guys are making an impression, or is it? I'd like to see the projected impact guys doing their thing.

About Erixon, I'm going to assume that he's just going through the motions because he knows where he stands with the team already. Not sure I like that attitude if that's what's going on.

Pretty sure Erixon wasn't in camp for long...I think I read that he left town due to the passing of his grandfather. The kid has held his own against men in arguably the 2nd best league in the world for a couple years now...he'll be fine on the 3rd pairing to start the season. He might not be flashy, but the word is his defense is nearly flawless.

This right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_4UiqhdIts.

The moment he was drafted, Pierre says "He's not fancy, he's not slick, he's just good...he is a tremendously talented person, but he never does anything fancy; he's just safe, reliable and good."

As said, he had just limited time during the camp as well...I'm very excited to see this kid play...

Somebody else was correct when they said Yogan looks like a tank. After watching the video from the camp, he's almost as tall as McIlrath and much more filled out. IMO, he's someone to keep an eye on.

Watching him at the rink this year, I just couldn’t believe it,” Clark said. “The overall confidence of his game, his handling of the puck, the moving of the puck and his body, the way he’s built muscles. He knows he has to put on weight, but he doesn’t want to do it just pumping iron. He wants to do it naturally and he has a great build on him. He’s really developing well.”
