Our defense is a huge wild card but I am expecting a much faster & mobile defense than last year. Hamrlik was slow as molasses and this caused problems with our offense because the transition and passing sucked which would kill our small forwards in the neutral zone.

If Markov stays healthy and Yemelin plays anywhere close to a top4 there is nothing to worry about. Hamrlik brought very little to this team when you factor in what his presense took away.

Considering he had to fill in for an injured Markov the last two seasons, his presence didnt take anything away from anybody... au contraire.

I'd really like Weber to have a breakout year and become some kind of poor man's Enstrom for us. He can easily pick up Hamrlik's humble offensive production. Meanwhile Yemelin can try picking up the void left defensively with the help of Markov. It might be Gorges tho that really replaces Hamrlik as the anchor of a no2 pairing. Or Subban.

One of the 3 rookies need to step it up, Gorges must keep getting better and Markov needs to play like he did before.

My question is, are they good enough defensively to make up for the loss of a very important defenseman over the past few years in Roman Hamrlik. Diaz seems to be primarily an offensive defenseman, while Emelin is clearly a physical player, who can skate and can pass. But what is his defensive awareness truly like.
Definitely not right away, that whay PG was trying to re-sign him...I think we'll sign a veteran for depth.

At 37 we were going to lose the Harmlik of past years regardless. Not sure if Elemin replaces Harmlik or staying healthy and Weber will replace him and Elemin replace Mara?

No they can't. Diaz won't be in the NHL at all, not sure how he would make up for Hamrlik in the AHL.

We need Yemelin to be able to play with Markov against the best lines of any teams. I hope he will be able to do that right away.

We know he has the skill to play in the nhl. We just don't know if he will learn fast enough how hockey is played in the nhl.

Hamrlik is replaced by Markov and I hope Markov will be a good teacher for Yemelin.

Hopefully the injury bug bites some other team this year, I will close my eyes each time that Markov goes into the corner after the puck. Time will tell how Yemelin will play, one thing is certain, if he is a Darius Kaspuritis clone then he will spend lots of time in the penalty box. PG has lots of confidence in PK and Gorges and I think Hamrlik took the 1 year contract offer as a slap in the face and he walked away. The time was right to let Hammer walk away, the D had to get younger, hopefully Spacek gets trader for someone younger with more of a physical prescence.

I don't think they can be relied upon to the eat the minutes that Hamrlik had to.

That's why I'm hoping we sign Hannan to play as the rugged presence on Markov's pairing.

To adapt, they'll have to play, let them make mistakes and learn the NHL game within the first 20 games instead of getting stuck with trading for bottom pairing D because we have injuries late in the season...

Yes thats true but Markov and Gorges are back and they will eat alot of minutes and Subban has another year under his belt.

I think nobody here knows anything about Yellowman. We didnt exactly hunker down into the stands in Omsk Siberia to watch games last season, did we?

We have too much cap space not to lock up a D for 1-2 seasons 4 mil type deal. Maybe we'll make a deal for Ballard? I could see him being a fit here and the Canucks likely will want him gone regardless of if they have the space to keep him.

Wiz 5th for Ballard?

PG would look pretty smart if he got Ballard and Ballard played well for us.
