I would say Ashton has a good chance, Connolly not so much, needs to get more weight and strength to play in the nhl

Connolly signed an entry level contract. I'd love to see him on your roster next season. That guy is a dynamite scorer.

I see a lot of people looking at Connolly and Ashton as potential lightning players this season, but what about the forgotten James Wright? He has more pro experience with 1/2 a season of nhl games and a full year in the AHL under his belt. I thought he was just as good as Tyrell and Ashton last preseason. He could definitely play on our 3rd line.

Yzerman said last season he was cut because they thought he could continue to develop his offensive game and be more than what he was his rookie year:

http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/lightn...al-spots-heats
Quote:
"We want to make the right decision for the person," Boucher said. "If we feel a guy like Tyrell is going to be better in his role here because if he goes down and he gets a different role, it doesn't necessarily help us, so he might be better off here."

Boucher expanded the point talking about James Wright, who was cut and sent to Norfolk.

"He could have been with us," Boucher said. "But we don't want him to be just a grinding guy. With Wright, we think there's more to his game in terms of skill and power play He wouldn't be getting any of that here. You give him some ice time but that's not enough in his case."
He went to Norfolk and in his first AHL year scored 16 goals and 47 points. I feel like now that he's put up some good numbers in the AHL, he should be ready to join the team again. This also gives Ashton a chance to play in the AHL if they want to take it slow. What do you all think?

At present, I see the lineup as:

Downie-Stamkos-St. Louis
______-Lecavalier-Purcell
Malone-Moore-_________
Hall-Thompson-Tyrell
Jones

Hedman-Clark
Ohlund-Brewer
Bergeron-Kubina
Gervais

Roloson
Garon

Obviously, I think Stamkos and Purcell signings are inevitable and a top-6 addition is a priority. It will be interesting to whether the org decides to replace Bergenheim with an internal or external solution.

Malone on the 3rd line? Really?

Downie - Stamkos - St. Louis
Malone - Lecavalier - Purcell
B. Jones - Moore - Ashton?
Thompson - Hall - Tyrell

It's sad but to me these are the 2011-12 lines for the Tampa Bay Lightning. This assumes we sign Stamkos and Purcell.

It's tough to tell where Malone will be placed, but I'll bet on him playing with St Louis / Stamkos. That's where he was most often last season, though Downie also spent a lot of time with them so it's hard to be sure.

The only thing I'd be worried about is finding as good of chemistry on Moore's line as late last year. It's a great asset to have a bottom 6 guy who can play circles around the pairings he usually gets to face (thanks to the top two lines). I have a feeling he'll be solid no matter what, but who knows who he'll be playing with on a regular basis.

So let's assume Stamkos and Purcell get re-signed. You can't really say our roster is an improvement over the 2010-11 team. Of course, Yzerman isn't finished yet but let's take a look.

Downie - Stamkos - St. Louis
Malone - Lecavalier - Purcell
B. Jones - Moore - ???
Tyrell - Thompson - Hall

Ohlund - Brewer
Hedman - Clark
Bergeron - Kubina
Gervais

Roloson
Garon

G:
+ Garon
- Smith

overall so far: +
Garon was solid for the Jackets until he had to carry the load of being their #1 for a while. He should be fine playing 25-30 games. He has played with Roloson in Edmonton before and is cheaper than Smith ($1.3m vs $2.0m).

D:
+ Gervais
- Lundin
- R. Jones

overall so far: -
I expect - or rather hope we will see at least one more signing. The acquisition of Gervais is still a bit of a headscratcher but it has potential to be a steal. Clark and R. Jones were deemed to be "terrible players" by their former teams' fans and they turned out to be just fine with us. Gervais posted great numbers in the minors but had troubles on Long Island.

The lack of mobility and a true PMD wasn't adressed yet. But there are still a couple of interesting UFAs on the market: Babchuk, I. White, Kaberle, McCabe, Lepisto, Hillen, Stralman and of course Lundin.

F:
- Gagne (top-6)
- Bergenheim (top-9)

overall so far: -
I think Boucher and Yzerman expect B. Jones to be our Bergenheim replacement. He'll provide energy, physicality, grit, balls to the wall fore- and backcheck etc. Plus he's solid on faceoffs and the PK. Tyrell had a solid first year but has to make the next step forward, too.

I don't think it would make a lot of sense to rush Ashton or Connolly at this point of time and that doesn't sound like the Yzerman approach anyway. Gagne might still be an option on paper but as was reported a return is not very likely. And I don't mind that. Too many injuries and probably too expensive.

Remaining UFAs too keep an eye on: A. Steward, Shannon, Miettinen, Bergfors, Schremp, B. Morrison, Madden, Tambellini, Grier.

I'm telling everyone, we should resign Johan Harju. 750K is cheap for a guy who "wants to play in NHL" and shows it on the ice. If he doesn't, not a big loss. But he gets his chance, and the Lightning might have stolen a player to patch up the ugly vessel that is becoming our forwards.

If Yzerman doesn't sign Stamkos, then he should be required to suit up and play.

St. Louis - Yzerman - Downie

Seriously. At this point we NEED Stamkos. Really, we need him no matter what sort of money it takes.

Even if we re-sign Stamkos and Purcell, we'll be worse than last year. Losing Lundin is big, especially because of his mobility. Obviously there is lots of time still, but our roster will be pretty full if we just keep Stamkos and Purcell. Hopefully a trade goes down, because with the current market, I don't think we'll be much improved if at all if Yzerman goes for strictly UFA's.

Nothing wrong with that. Malone spent a lot of time on the 3rd this year when Gagne-Lecavalier hooked up with Bergenheim and Purcell.

We sent him that offer already, but he's going to stay there and keep the offer he has from Lulea. I'm not sure if he really wants to play here.

Hahaha!! Especially since we don't have players with those names. Stankos. I giggled, I admit.

Lulea? I've been there, what a dump. But I suppose if you like a place like Lulea, Tampa is not at similar.

You seem to forget that Malone played extensively on the 3rd line last season. He bounces in and out of top-6 quite frequently, but that's not a slight against him. Like Downie, he's a good fit pretty much anywhere in the lineup.

Malone only becomes a top-6 lock, IMO, if the Lightning are unable or unwilling to add another top-6 forward in addition to re-signing Stamkos and Purcell. I think that possibility is far from certain on July 2, but even if that proves to be the case, I would expect Yzerman to add sign or trade for a 3rd line option. I highly doubt he relies on both B. Jones and a rookie to get the job done night in and night out alongside Moore.

I think he might get some playing time next season. Just getting a taste of the NHL more than anything. Then I think the 2012 he will be on the team. As will Ashton.
