I think we basically just paid Toronto to take the contract of a guy that's likely not going to play again.

With that said, Franson was our best trade chip in acquiring scoring help. I'm not sure what we can really even do at this point.

Putting us what, 13 Mil below the floor. Weber might get 7 Mil, SK 2, Spalling 1 and Oreiley 1, still leaves 2, just to get to floor. Dont panic guys, something is coming, it HAS to be. I think we will all be happy when this is done.

The only thing that would make me happy is that we announce Weber signing along with Stamkos ....that's got to be something of that nature

even with Lombardi out, if he doesn't play at least 60 games over the next 2 years, we'll get a 2013 4th. If he plays 60+ games, then Nash gets a 2013 4th.

Agreed. When I first read of the trade, I thought it was a steal but your post is right on. Not a terribly steep price to pay for getting rid of an awful contract.

Sorry for the leaf troll by the way.

Again the problem from Nashville's perspective is that to acquire a scorer, Franson was likely one of the best bargaining chips (Ellis moves up that list now).

How long have you been a Predator fan?

Seriously?

Everytime we need to get to the cap floor or something of that nature we sign Radek Bonk, Greg Devries, and other assorted crap.

I can't believe we had to throw in a fourth round pick as well. OMG. Infuriating.

I think this shows, rather conclusively, that the thoughts of trading Franson as the centerpiece (or significant component) of a package to land anything in the way of a good top 6 forward was a fairy tale. If Franson truly was a valuable commodity, there would have been several teams lined up to LTIR Lombardi for him. Clearly, the rest of the NHL wasn't prepared to give up much for Franson.

And, if you step back, that makes sense. He's a 3rd pairing Dman on this team who is slow and nonphysical but is a great passer with a very good shot. He projects out as a very flawed #4 Dman, solid PP specialist in the modern NHL. I hate to say it, but those players don't have tons of value.

My only concerns with this trade are if the Preds don't make a move to fill up that $2M in freshly available salary or if Lombardi comes back and plays a bunch of games for TO. Other than that, the deal is more meh than anything.

Here's my thoughts...

This move cannot be judged yet until we know what Poile plans on doing with the cap space/cash that was just freed up. He has to spend it per the CBA and judging this move without knowing how that money will be spent is premature as the facts are not all in.

To re-sign Weber (and Suter/Rinne) we need to show a commitment to winning. Trading off guys to simply bring back what we already have isn't going to get that done. Instead, I believe that Poile has another piece to this puzzle in the works that will bring everything full circle and will put this trade into context.

Cody Franson and Matt Lombardi's contracts were not traded for two minor league pieces. There is more here than meets the eye at the moment...

Prehaps. If this were the case I'd be more out to believe it's money that would be allocated to keep SK74 and maybe one of the others.

FYI we only freed up $2,850,000 in salary.

Lebda is now the second highest paid defensemen on our team (well third if Weber signs).

I just can't believe that we took back Lebda. Not only did we have to give up Franson to trade Lombardi's contract, we had to take on Lebda. Not to mention the conditional 4th rounder.

The Predators have one of the smartest management teams in the NHL. There is something else up here. I feel bad about taking Franson off your hands for Lebda though. The guy is seriously useless. Trotz is a smart coach though and will probably not dress him after seeing him in training camp. Bury him in the AHL and forget about him.

I'm surprised no Leaf fans have mentioned this yet, but this guy was -3 in a 9-3 win over the Thrashers last year.

The Nashville Predators cannot afford to pay a guy 1,450,000 to play in Milwaukee.

Especially since Bouillion is making 1,350,000 and isn't even playing.

This man speaks the truth. On behalf of all leafs fans, I apologize that you even have lebda in your org, even if he never plays (hopefully)

I basically agree with you. We have to add pieces, not keep re-signing them. We have no choice but to go out and make a trade. Right now we are the team we were last year minus Franson, Dumont, Ward and Sullivan (and Goc if we want to say him also). Of course if we do make some kind of sweet trade, who is left to give up that won't put us behind the 8-ball due to losing too much value? If Franson was getting any kind of strong interest from even one team then we could've used him in a trade much better than this one.

I'm for the trade if it reaps a big benefit. If it doesn't currently do anything more than re-sign Weber then it's kind of puzzling. Because like I said that's great, but that still leaves us as the same team as last year minus the four aforementioned players.

I feel like you are right. Im still frustrated atm though, what do you think our best trading chips are now that Cody is gone? He was surely one of the best. Now its getting to the point where we cant really afford to lose Blum/Ellis/Josi

This move only frees up about $2.85 million in cap space for this season. More for the following season when you consider Lebda is gone and Franson was due a raise.
