I struggle seeing how two 60-point seasons are sub-par for a second liner. I think if we could get that production out of him next year we would be set.
At the time, did you think the habs got a 2nd liner? Remember that plekanec had alot of question marks around him since he was coming off a 39 point season. With koivu out of the fold, I think its clear that the habs thought they were getting a #1 centreman, and they tried him out in that role when they lined him up with gionta and cammalleri.
He's a guy that has hit the 70 point mark 4 times before he got to mtl, so coming to mtl after a 58 point season was largely considered an off year. They simply haven't got what they wanted out of him, and thank god pleks rebounded or this trade would look far worse than it already does.

I don't think he'll score 38 points again, I think he'll be around 50. If he gets below 40 points when we have Cammalleri, Cole, Pacioretty, Gionta, Kostitsyn, and likely Desharnais as wingers - he's got a huge problem.

Well, maybe one reason why Pleks rebounded is that teams had to guard against Gomez and Gionta too. With Koivu slowing down, he was no longer a big threat, except on the PP.

Desharnais played less than two periods as a winger and not surprisingly got hurt. Why would people think he is "likely" to be a winger??

Either Desharnais or Eller will make for one of the best 4th line centers in the league.

i don't see gorges scoring 5. i see weber scoring closer to ten (for some odd reason), i see patches and gio scoring more so yeah, 3.11 goals per game. lots to be excited

Great post. Pretty much sums up what the Canadiens need to make a long playoff run.
One thing that intrigues me is a Pacioretty-Cole duo. I know management will want them on 2 different lines to balance things out but there's bound to be some line shuffling by Martin at some point in the season when a line gets cold or if there's injuries.
Seeing the 2 of them just putting on the jets and powering trough the outside or forechecking like crazy and pinning down defenders in their zone would be quite a thing to see.
I wonder what a Pacioretty-Plekanec-Cole line could do just out of curiosity.

I thought they were getting a bad 1st line center/awesome second line center to go with Plekanec who I thought was at a similar level. Basically two guys between 20-40 in the league at their position.
What will be pleasant for JM is that he can fiddle anyway he likes his top 9. They all have the same ingredients, the same mix and match.
I don't beleive Gomez will be sent down in the minors. Politics aside Gomez would make a very good 3rd line center. And basically, who really cares on what line you play until you provide success for the team.

So the natural reaction is "Well, if (insert goalie's name here) wasn't so good they'd be a lottery team. I doubt he repeats that performance." You'd think people would eventually catch on that pretty much every goalie looks good in Montreal.

Your wingers are basically fine, your centermen a mess. In order to insist on not having DD or Eller as the 4th line center, you elevate Engqvist above Darche. That is just NOT going to happen. Darche will be a regular before Engqvist, who hasn't proved much so far, to be honest. Even Tom Pyatt would do a better job of 4th line Center than Engqvist, and I prefer Pyatt on wing. Pyatt would also be cheaper!
A fourth line of Desharnais-White-Darche would contribute to lots of wins as they torch the slugs and enforcers others use on their fourth lines. Like Risebrough-Tremblay-Lambert once did.

Yes. they did earn it. But they were also incredibly fortunate for the other teams star players being knocked down like flies along the way. However that doesn't change the fact that you won the most playoff games, making you the champions of this year. But with that being said, the habs have won the most stanley cups in history, making them the champions of alltime.
My roster I have made with our current team had GOals per game of 3.14 which I think is really realistic with the team we have. I honestly think it could all come down to Gomez and him causing a domino effect on the whole team. I really think he's been working incredibly hard this offseason and that he will prove all his hatred wrong this season. I really love his transition game and what he can do for thisteams chemistry and skill when he is playing to his potential.
