Canucks sign F Steven Pinizzotto to 1-Year, $600,000 Deal (Two-Way)

Who?

dcmahiban Dhiren Mahiban
The #Canucks have signed right winger Steven Pinizzotto

EDIT: Ah. More AHL fodder.

Pinizzotto spent 68 games with the Capitals #AHL affiliate (Hershey Bears) in 2010-11 where he had 42 points (17-25-42) and 178 penalty minutes.

Incidentally, he was the first player from RIT to sign an NHL contract. RIT, of course, is where Chris Tanev came from.

kenwardskorner Joey Kenward
#Canucks sign 27 year old RW Steven Pinizzotto. In 68 GP with Hershey in AHL last year, the 6'1", 195lb grad of RIT had 17g, 25a, & 178PIM

Looks like a tough guy, doubt he'll end up on the nucks. Good signing for the Wolves.

He was on the ground from the hit and had a guy raining blows on him from above, what would you do?

He leveled a guy and gets a 2 handed chop to the head. I don't think he's superman enough to recover that quickly to get up and fight

Sounds like a pasta dish.

Anyway it's good to see they're trying to add some size to the Wolves to surround guys like Schroeder, Hodgson, Rodin, etc.

maybe the type of guy we can dress on the 4th line against teams who have multiple goons like the Oilers?

Seems like an agitator/feisty guy with somewhat of an (AHL) offensive upside. Three solid signings for the Wolves thus far, with the first two (Ebbett, Mancari) also being plausible NHL depth players.

Any word on salary for Pinizzotto?

When I saw the name Bortozzo it seemed like some weird alternate world version of Bertuzzi when I watched the clip.

If we have injuries during the year, this guy could be an interesting 4th line call up. He scores at a decent clip for AHL levels and fights. Maybe a welcome addition?

For comparisons sake, Tanner Glass had a high of 6 goals in 43 games in the AHL, while Pinizzotto scored 17 in 68 last year.

He has a nice fight card too, took some looks through the videos and he can hold his own.

Here is a feature article on Steve Pinizzotto - he sees himself as a pest and agitator and plays like Brad Marchand although he is considerably bigger.

The Canucks were in a bidding war with 7 other NHL clubs for his services and he is going to get a shot at making the NHL roster.

Brings some grit, toughness and physicality but has also shown good hands with good wheels.
“I played against (Marchand) in the American League. He’s not a fun guy to play against but you can ask anybody in that league and they’ll probably say the same thing about me. I feel that helped Boston out a lot, just him doing that, getting the high-end guys off their game. We have very similar styles. But I think I can be a lot more physical than him.”

At 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, Pinizzotto is a couple of sizes bigger than the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Marchand and he doesn’t mind initiating.

“I’m not going to be a team’s heavyweight — that’s not what I do — but I definitely like to help the boys out,” said Pinizzotto. “I understand I need to fill a void. I like to get the crowd going. I’m not going to go in there and score 30 goals, but I’ll be a big energy guy. That’s what they want.”

Canucks assistant GM Lorne Henning said Pinizzotto has been on the Canucks’ AHL radar for two or three years.

“He’s a great skater, takes the body, goes to the net hard, great hands,” said Henning. “Every time we go watch him play he always sticks out. He makes things happen and guys don’t like playing against him. He’s been one of those guys who’s been knocking at the door and deserves a chance and he’s going to get a chance with us.”
