And that's exactly why those names shouldn't be used.

Yep, everyone's pining over the fact that no division is currently named after a grocery store tycoon who ran a hockey team on the side.

From reading this article, I don't want the new format. Look at the division were in and only top 4 would make the playoffs. yikes!

EAST
Boston Bruins
Buffalo Sabres
Detroit Red Wings
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
Philadelphia Flyers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Toronto Maple Leafs
This is a scary prospect. All the more reason to ditch the very idea.

Jack Adams
Conn Smythe
Lester Patrick
James Norris

EDIT: geez 2 out of 4

I agree with this. Being in a tough division would get Murray to get off his ass and stop pointing at prospects all the time while improving the big club.

Pressure is good. Your butt being above the fire is good.
Bring in the Wings, Flyers, Penguins. If we can't elevate and make the playoffs on a regular basis with our new core, maybe the new core wasn't all that to begin with?

This. It doesn't work with 30 teams. It is absolutely NOT fair that certain teams have a better odds at the playoffs. 4 of 8 in one division and 4 of 7 in the other? No way the teams in the division of 8 would like this.

EDIT: There would probably be a crossover rule.

Even then though, it's a bad idea for the reason that it affects your playoff chances more depending on if you play in a weak/strong division. Bad idea.

I don't remember much complaining coming out of the Patrick Division for the twelve seasons they had an extra team.

Keep the conferences, go with two divisions instead of three. It's now harder to get punished for being in a strong division.

I really hope Quebec City gets the Coyotes next year, three Canadian teams in our division would be fantastic.

I would rather lose Florida than the Yotes. Hows the ownership down there/money situation? The owner has to be taking huge losses when only 1/3rd of the stadium is filled.

The divisions are there mainly for rivalry, travel schedule, time zones. It is not fair that a team with the highest points in their division is guaranteed a playoff spot. I hope after the 2011/2012 season they get rid of that and move the Jets to a different division or perhaps even the Western Conference which should then pave the way for Detroit Red Wings to come back to the Eastern Conference. Nothing wrong with keeping the Eastern Conference with 8 Playoff teams and the Western Conference with 8 playoff teams. Imo they should even get rid of the last place team being guaranteed a top draft pick while the stanley cup champions are left to pick nearly last. The Draft should be determined by lottery round after round. Now that would be the ultimate realignment as it would strengthen competition amongst teams, players, coaches, general managers and scouts, and prevent a team from tanking a season.
