Remember that years ago, no free agents would ever sign for Montreal... Remember all the frustrations years ago on these july 1st... Since the Camallerri - Gionta - Gomez - Moen - Gill acquisition year, it seems that a lot more players are considering Montreal and even contemplating playing here. ...
There's no way we could acquire a free agent for below market value.
Habs cant with the current tax rate go out there and underpay for Free agents. Players here give mode than 50% of their salary to the government ... It sucks but we have to understand That in our situation we didnt overpay for our players.
Vokoun waited too long to sign, no teams were looking for a goalie anymore. I doubt he really wanted to sign in Washington where he'll have to battle for the #1 spot at his age.

Even with the taxes and our overpayments, players in Montreal are not making as much as somewhere else. Take Gionta for example. He makes 5M here...he would probably make 4,5M somewhere else. The 500K doesn't make a huge difference...he still makes less than another place at 4,5M.
But anyways, some players will come here because they want to...not only because of the money. We are a good team now. We have Carey Price and P.K. Subban. I think older players likes to go to teams with good young players because they know that those teams will only get better...

Not sure he'll really battle for his spot. Vokoun is a top 10 goaltender in the league. If he plays well, he'll be the starter...and he was great on a bad Panthers team. I can't see how he'll not be good in Washington. He wants to win...that's why is signed for less...
Edmonton, Eric Bélanger and Tomas Vokoun with the caps and i'm sure there are very few more. Gone during the Canada day weekend I imagine?
Really wasn't a good market for goalies this summer, only Bryzgalov signed a huge contract.
That being said, Vokoun did get a pretty low deal, I'll give that.
Bélanger didn't sign for much either, but I don't if I'd say he's undervalued, probably more at the right value.
In terms of what the Habs were looking for (big top 6 forwards), nobody signed under its value. Joel freaking Ward signed for 3 millions a year.
Did this happen? I've played story mode in NHL games since 2000 and we get free agents and win the cup every year. Why would they put it in story mode if it wasn't the story of the previous NHL season?
