If I was renegotiating the CBA

These are 6 amendments I would make to the upcoming CBA:

1) 30 million hard cap (nice round figure) (owners advantage)

2) 1 Franchise player exemption (i.e. not counted towards salary cap) (players advantage)

3) Equal revenue sharing on television contracts (equal advantage)

4) All teams must keep a 30 million dollar payroll (players advantage)

5) Get rid of guaranteed contracts OR decrease substantially the buyout rate to something like 15-20% (owners advantage)

6) Reduce UFA age to 27-28 (player advantage)

Basically, just make it more like the NFL!

Hard caps are a bad fit for the NHL because from what I can see some teams make easily twice as much as other teams. So a hard cap will either be way to high and not help the smaller market teams or way to low and cut players off from revenues that they mostly create.

I think that all this would really do is escelate the star players salary and I don't think that the star players are the ones who need their earning potential protected. If anything I would lean towards implementing a maximum salary that cap what your best players make and protect the earning potential

A nice idea but if you search some of the old posts you'll find that the NHL only makes a small portition of it's revenues through TV deals so this would be a band aid solution at best.

I argree that if some sort of salary cap is implemented that a salary floor should be implemented.

I like the lower buy out option and I don't really see how this hurts the players. Basically you would get paid twice for the same year and their only real arguement is what if he's tremendously overpaid (Yeah, I'm talking about you Martin Lapointe).

As a fan I really wouldn't like this much but the players would be giving up a lot so I guess I can't really argue against it.

Well, that was pretty harsh. Care to elaborate?

1) 30 million hard cap (nice round figure) (owners advantage)

Way too low.

2) 1 Franchise player exemption (i.e. not counted towards salary cap) (players advantage)

The Larry Bird rule would work in the NHL.

3) Equal revenue sharing on television contracts (equal advantage)

There's not enough money in local TV contracts to really go around. Some teams will lose money as the average will be lower than what they make now. And Bill Wirtz would love it.

4) All teams must keep a 30 million dollar payroll (players advantage)

Owners won't agree to it.

5) Get rid of guaranteed contracts OR decrease substantially the buyout rate to something like 15-20% (owners advantage)

Players will never agree to it.

6) Reduce UFA age to 27-28 (player advantage)

Owners probably won't agree to a reduction that steep.

Basically, just make it more like the NFL!

The NFL is a terrible model for any sport that is not the NFL.

In all the discussions about revenue sharing, I can't believe I never thought to mention Bill Wirtz. His behaviour would be duplicated around the league if local TV money was shared (without heavy, and VERY carefully planned out regulations to govern it).

I couldn't agree more. The NFL works because there's enough money in their national TV deal for all the owners to roll around in naked on a bed (hopefully in seperate beds, otherwise, that mental picture just gets nasty).
