Finding the next Moulson

The free agency market has pretty much dried up at this point, so we should really go fishing and try and find someone who can rise above. Worst comes to worst, we have another AHL body (which we need).

Candidates:

Ryan Stone - 26 y/o, 6-2, 200lbs, energy winger who was a scorer in the W.

Brandon Segal - 27 y/o, 6-2, 209lbs, physical winger with some hands.

Alexander Sulzer - 27 y/o, 6-1, 204lbs, offensive d-man

Christian Hanson - 25 y/o, 6-3, 228lbs, big winger

Fabian Brunnstrom - 26 y/o, 6-2, 212lbs, last chance for him?

Hanson or BURN-strom
They are the youngest and they do have something left in the tank
But I'd prefer Hanson more than Fabian
Hanson would be great on the third line

Moulson was almost a ppg player in the AHL. None of these guys have been nearly as productive.

Sulzer is most intriguing, but with de Haan, Donovan, Katic, Ness, Klementyev, Olson, and Reece all part of the Sound Tiger blueline, there's no room to even take a shot at him.

Would love to see the team add Alex Sulzer or Sami Lepisto.

As far as forwards are concerned, some team will likely give Norwegian Patrick Thoresen another shot. The only question is if a team here would give him the one-way deal and money he can get in Russia. He's really come into his own the past three seasons in Switzerland and Russia. He'll be 28 in November.

I think Thoresen just signed a new one year deal in Russia. He has to play top six minutes or else he is of little use to an NHL team

Lepisto on a two-way would be nice. I like Hanson as well.

Alexandre Giroux would have been a good signing. Even though he's 30yrs old, he's been a ppg player in the AHL and put up over 100pts in Hershey 2 years back.

i think the last couple of years have shown that you can never have enough defensive depth

Can he help if Dippy gets 25-40 starts? We really should focus on someone who can keep them from scoring as we have plenty of guys right now to help us score. And DP is another year older and none the wiser positionally.

Thinking of that really makes me worry we let Martinek go for some Wiz clone to be announced.

Maybe, instead of the next Matt Moulson, we can try and find the next Martin St. Louis or Tim Thomas!!

There is NO helping the Islanders with regards to goaltending. I just hope the Isles don't burn through their goalie prospects.

Sulzer has stated in interviews in the German press that he's not going to sign a two-way contract. The dude is 26/27 and has a number of good offers out of Europe that would get him a good 60-90 thousand more than he'd earn while in the AHL.

When I saw Hanson at the 2010 WC here in Germany, he was AWFUL. The US didn't get past the relegation round and guys like him, Kennedy and Nystrom were three of the primary reasons for that. I dunno if they were just out partying the whole time in Cologne (can happen), but his game was lousy. I see Nystrom didn't do ANYTHING last season to dissuade my disinterest in him last summer after seeing how ineffective he was for Team USA. Kennedy also had a season to forget.

As for Lepisto, the guy is 27 and just played 70 games in the NHL, getting 4-12-16 with a +10. He played 66 NHL games with 11 points and a +14 the year before. There ain't no way he's signing a two-way deal. The kid has officially arrived.
