who knows? it would seem that Nsh didn't dig very deep in looking to make this move, or perhaps there is something more to come later in the year with these two teams.
you would think that we'd have made an offer, thing is Spacek cost 2m$ more than Ledba, so perhaps we didn't/wouldn't have had the pieces Nsh needed in return?
Franson would have been a solid addition, giving us one more young guy to battle it out for the bottom-4
and Lombardi, if he regains his health, is a solid player and would fit right in (great skater, good-defensively) to our top-9, if not, he's on ltir and cap-space frees up.
It required a team willing to A: take on the salary of Franson and Lombardi (although he could be put on LTIR) and B: the owners' consent on the willingness to pay the money to Lombardi even if he didnt play. Yes Franson is good, but many teams dont have cap space or are not willing to pay a player for nothing.
Lol, what are these expectations? Just because X team made a good trade means that we should have been able to top that offer each time? You honestly thing the GM could do all sorts of offers to all players and teams for every possible outcome? Psshh... Sure Pg knew that the Leafs were going for such a player, sure you assume he didn't do any offers, you also assume that PG knew what others were offering... C'mon, get real!
People are never happy... Don't do anything, get pissed. Do something, get pissed. Some other team does a trade, get pissed we couldn't match it...
there's no LTIR in the summer and a player cant be placed on it till the season starts, but you can exceed the cap by up to 10% but IF (and this is a big if) we were to get to that level of expenditure we run the risk of missing out on good players later in the year after arbitration etc, case in point.. when jp dumont was let go by buffalo, we had no cap space with which to sign him and everyone widely and soundly bashed management for "lacking foresight" and not "saving capspace" and whatever else they whined about.. now everyone wants to, essentially, waste the capspace on a player who may or may not play.. yes it looks highly highly unlikely lombardi is sadly done but just as is the case with the bruins and savard, until lombardi or savvy call it a career they cant be demoted or bought out or whatever and that money is used on the cap till theyre put on LTIR. In nashville's case, its 3.5 mil wasted. The leafs arent a cup contender at the moment (on paper at least) and, as such, can afford to take that risk, the habs are closer to the promised land so to speak then the leafs so the risk isnt necessarily worth the reward to the team..
Also from what the preds fans have stated, cody franson is, at most, marginally faster then komisarek was (to the point its deemed a wash) so yes he has offensive instincts but he's basically a 6'5" gill who can pass...

You hit the nail right on the head. A lot of people around here love to critize and act like the grass is greener on the other side. I would love to have Franson, but it was not meant to be.
The NHL isn't an auction house. When a player is on the block all 30 GMs don't gather in one room and raise their paddles in a bidding war. Nothing would ever get done.
I know it makes sense that if you're a GM and you want to get rid of a player you contact all 30 GMs and judge which one is offering the best package but we've seen that's now how it works. Poile most likely targeted the Leafs and maybe a couple other teams as potential places he could dump Lombardi's salary and worked from there. Even if it was one of those scenarios in which a fax was sent out to every team in the league, I'm willing to bet not many GMs gave a second thought to a message asking if they'd be willing to take a salary dump.
Also have to give Burke some credit here. Not sure how he does it, but he pulls off some good trades. I doubt Franson's name was used to drum up interest by Poile, but Burke managed to finagle him out of Nashville. Same thing a couple of seasons ago when he somehow convinced Sutter he was doing him a favour by taking Phaneuf and he'd have to add Aulie to sweeten the pot.
Or maybe he's just cheap. Certainly been notorious for being very cheap so who knows.
That comment has pretty much be beaten death. Almost at the salary cap and the team is cheap?? Like every other team, they overpay for some and underpay for others.
Franson is a good young d-man, but far from a stud...he is a #4 on a poor team, #5-6 on a strong team. He only played 15:11 per game last year.
This.
He's got the potential to be a good #3-4 guy down the road. Will he ever reach it? By all means we didn't have a comparable to Lebda on defense (Spacek makes way more and Gorges is better than Franson). Was Nashville interested in a forward? Only Moen really fits the profile in terms of cap hit/trade chip (no way we trade Pacioretty/DDH). I doubt Nashville was even looking at a roster forward to come back in the trade.
So the question boils down to whether you'd trade Weber for Lombardi's cap hit & Franson. Ultimately I think it boils down to how high we are on Weber and what management intends to do with the current open cap space we have..
It was a good deal for Toronto because they won't be able to fill all their cap space (barring more miracle trades), but we are much closer to the cap and I don't think PG is done.
After all the discussions that Gomez salary generated over the years, I find surprising that one could entertain the idea of trading for the wasted cap hit of others.
Burke has built the core of this team off of cap rejects, Kessel, Phaneuf, MacArthur, Lupul, Versteeg, Grabovski, Komisarek and now Lombardi. Burke has very different methods from GMs like Gauthier and look where it got him.
Nashville has proven to be great at managing assets despite limited resources. I'm sure they know perfectly what they just did with Franson. Probably an overrated product of a solid system like Cam Barker.
Compared to what we have in our system right now.....he sure is.
I'd take Franson over Weber, Tinordi, Carle, Klubbertanz, Nash, etc...
The Leafs got him for free. So they have to take on 3.5 in Lombardi's CAP space.....boo hoo!
I'd take that trade every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Plus Lombardi might not even play, therefore his CAP wouldn't count, and he's a Montreal boy to boot. I won't blame Goatse on this one, as like me, he probably didn't know Franson was in play.
