This could be a very frustrating season because the expectations are going to be high. I could see this team finishing 5-7 and with 5 or 6 more points than last year and it seeming like a complete disaster.

And I think we're at 70+ years now with just one Cup...

I'm of the belief that this team should easily be able to compete for 2nd in the division -- I don't think this team has the experience or talent as of now to compete with the Penguins -- maybe in the future, but for now, I just don't see it.

I'm happy to have Richards, but this doesn't automatically make us a top-4 seeded team ready to cruise in the playoffs. Typical Ranger fan over hype of a team that has only one (1) cup in the last 60+ years.

I think the Rangers can definitely make a 2nd round appearance this year but I still don't see us defeating the big guns in the East and especially the West. Something else that many people fail to realize is just because a year goes by, it doesn't mean that your young players improve automatically. This isn't NHL 11. There is every chance that they don't succeed as much as they do. Remember when we had "8 potential 20-goal scorers" a few years ago. Give me a break. Nothing ever works out the way it is planned. I know this sounds pessimistic, but people should do themselves a favor and be realistic and possibly hopeful instead of doubtful that they'll be nothing but a Stanley Cup contender.
It's not hype though. Look at that Bruins team that won last year. If that team can win a cup, then we very well might have a shot as well. We were a playoff team last year with significant injuries and a down year for Gaborik. Whether it's this year or in a season or two, this team is trending upward.

Time to come back down from the ceiling and wake up and smell the coffee, we are still going to be the epitame of what we always are year in and year out: AN AVERAGE TEAM!

I absolutely cannot wait to see what a real powerplay looks like.
Gretzky was far from dominant by time he got to the Rangers. He was soft on the puck and I got kind of tired of him skating into the zone, crossing the redline, twirling, and looking for the trailer. Too often the defender would just stand him up and turn the play the other way. Too few times did he control the play from behind the net. He wasn't the same Gretzky anymore.

IMO we have to go back to Pre-Vancouver Messier to go back to when we had a real #1 center.

Still, I'm SUPER excited for this coming season. This team was already solid and young. Adding Richards...OH BABY!!! Will be like adding Messier in the 90s.

It's 71 years and counting with only 1 cup! I can certainly see where all the optimism comes from but what it's based on I have no idea.
Let's see, pay 60 mil for a very good but hardly an elite player in Richards and then hope and pray that Gaborik decides to show up, compete and actually produce and that's gonna all of a sudden make us a team capable of competing for a cup. Talk about blind optimism! .

I more pumped for this upcoming season than I have been for any Rangers season. Brad Richards is a perfect fit and is just gonna make his linemates and others on the team so much better now that we have a legitimate top line. Not only that but we still have Gaborik, who will bounce back, Dubinsky, Callahan, Stepan. Anisimov, Zucca, Boyle, Prust, Staal, Girardi, Sauer, McDonagh.... such a good young team.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
1. Boston Bruins
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
3. New York Rangers
4. Buffalo Sabres
5. Tampa Bay Lightning
6. Washington Capitals
7. New Jersey Devils
8. Philadelphia Flyers
9. Carolina Hurricanes
10. Montreal Canadiens
11. Toronto Maple Leafs
12. Winnipeg Jets
13. New York Islanders
14. Florida Panthers
15. Ottawa Senators

I'm with everyone here who is pumped, and ready to go. Can't wait for opening night, even though it is in late October. One of my favorite parts of the season is player introductions. This may be the first time in a long time where no one will get booo'd haha.

I don't know if you were straight up ranking teams or doing seeding, but if you were doing seeding it's not possible for Pittsburgh to be number 2 and NYR to be number 3.

It's just a general power ranking. I think the Rangers will certainly be competing for the Atlantic Division crown.

I'll be the first to predict that no team in the east goes over 100pts
The only no brainier is that the Sens will finish last-by a lot.

Next years standings just to see how wrong I am:

1. Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Boston Bruins
3. Washington Capitals
4. New York Rangers
5. Buffalo Sabres
6. Philadelphia Flyers
7. Tampa Bay Lightning
8. Montreal Canadiens
---------------------------
9. New Jersey Devils
10. Toronto Maple Leafs
11. New York Islanders
12. Florida Panthers
13. Carolina Hurricanes
14. Ottawa Senators
15. Winnipeg Jets

Couple of curve balls in there, as that's usually what ends up happening.

Jesus the east is gonna be tight this year. short of a couple of bad teams like WPG, OTT, and maybe FL, everybody else has the chance to make the playoffs this year. Assuming the RFAs are taken care of and a solid #7 is found, I too believe that this team will finish 2nd in the atlantic, 5th in conference. 2nd rd knockout is probably on the cards as well though, which sucks but it'll be a step forward from last year, no question.

Just because something happened in the past doesn't mean it's going to happen again. If a franchise is run well, then it doesn't matter what it's history is. Look at the Red Sox. They went 86 years without a championship thanks to poor management. A new ownership group comes in and hires smart management and they suddenly win two championships and are constantly contending for another. Even though the Rangers don't have a new owner or gm, management finally got it (plus the Clark/Gorton/Tortorella braintrust came in). Right now, the Rangers are finally being well managed. Well managed teams win.

Since the lockout, there has been an average of four 100-point teams in the East each year, and never has there been a year with less than two. With three point games, it's damn near impossible for no one to reach 100 points.

After seeing the insanely stupid "who's our new whipping boy?" thread I felt the need to come here. I'd rather be optimistic when it's only July and we're probably not even done making moves.

You always need a whipping boy, even if you're undefeated. It's healthy.

How is Crosby since the concussion?

Everyone here was worried about Richards, and rightfully so, but the news surrounding Crosby wasn't pretty.

Curious to see how he preforms next season.

Crosbys was a lot different and worse. Richards has been fully healthy from it for some time now, Crosby is still recovering from what i heard. Though crosby will be 100% by the time training camp comes around.
