Possible New Centre Come 2006?

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/panther...hers_0912.html

I think this would be an awsome pick up for the Leafs.
Having watched a ton of Panthers games over the last few seasons I know that this guy can play. Hey has all of the skills and he has a ton of grit. I have seen Olli drop the gloves on many occasions either to fire up his team or to stick up for a teammate. What do all of you think about this one? If the Panthers don't make the playoffs this year I don't think that there is much of a chance of him resigning. There is also talk on the Panthers board that come March and the trade deadline, if the Panthers have no shot at the playoffs that he will probably be traded to a contending team so that they get something in return instead of just loose him in the offseason.

What are your opinions?
1. What do you think of Olli?
2. Would you sign him?
3. Would you trade for him at the deadline?
4. What would you trade?
5. Where would you put him? (Wing with Mats and Mariuz? 1st line centre? 2nd line centre?)

I'd pick him up in a second, but I don't know if I'd trade for him. I can't see the Panthers completley out of it by the deadline, so I don't think they would trade him. If we signed him, that would probably mean we wouldn't be signing Lindros for another year, unless we do some shifting and move him to wing.

#1 forward UFA next season, he'll command top dollar, and the Leafs will be in a position to spend it, and would not be making a mistake if they did.
He's a total package, and still underrated player.

1. Underrated talent, has not peaked yet
2. In a heartbeat to a long term contract 5 years.
3. Only if a contract was negotiated prior to the trade, and no 1st round draft pick, or top end prospects are involved, anyone older than 26 would be free to go.
4. see #3
5. That depends on who gets resigned at Center ...if Allison/Lindros do well, and are resigned, Olli would be top line Left winger, or if Lindros/Sundin plays the wing, he moves to center ...coaches call there.

I think he could be the guy to replace Mats in the future.

Big fan of Olli's, would love to see him on the Leafs, though if Allison and Lindros stick around, we don't exactly need another centre.

I wouldn't trade for him, but I'd absolutely love to have him on the team.
Great leadership skills, gives 100% every night and plays an excellent all around game.

If Allsion and Lindros stick around though, and given both seemed pretty set on playing here then we don't exactly need another Center.
Another problem is... he seems to have decided he's looking for $ above all else in UFA next season, and as one of the top UFA forwards he definitely won't be coming cheap.

well Lindros has shown that he can be effective on the wing *rw* and in fact its probably safer for him. I'd love to land olli as a UFA but I wouldn't be willing to trade for him... we'd have to give too much.

Czerkawski-Sundin-Lindros
Antropov-Jokinen-Ponikarovski

I like... leaving allison on 3rd line.

Why even bring up the Jokinen UFA status now? We haven't even started the season and you're talking about signing Jokinen next season.

What makes you think the Leafs will have the kind of cash to sign him?

He will certainly command 4.5 million per season and you have to remember the Leafs have alot of money to spend next offseason but they will also have only 3-4 players under contract.

Most importantly the Leafs would be better suited to go after a goalie because Belfour at 41 years old is not an ideal starter for our future. Turco is out there next season and I fully expect the Leafs, Stars and Wings to have serious interest.

Yes the Leafs need to go after a goalie but they will have lots of room under the cap to sign them.

Why bring it up? Because Olli just signed a 1 year contract today and he will become an unrestricted free agent next year unless he and the panthers sign an extension this year.
