I don't really agree with this attitude. Sure, Burke's presence was not going to make any difference, but that's like saying "our team was never going to beat Team X anyway, it's fine they just all mailed it in."

If you ask me, Canada day is a perfect day for Burke to visit the troops. Logically it makes perfect sense. It's a day that we celebrate everything that makes our country great. Burke is an amazing individual for spending time with the troops that fight to protect our country.

I honestly don't like posting messages of hate towards people, but Simmons went too far. Just when it seems like Cox was becoming a little better, Simmons becomes a hundred times worse. It's not just him either. The Sun in general is a complete joke. I'll stop here before I go overboard myself.

Simmons. Can't get any lower than that.

I'm also glad Burke didn't just let it slide.

I'd agree with you if we didn't offer Richards big money

we did. He turned it down. Nothing to do with Burke's presence, and hence...Simmons is a d-bag

Simmons said in an interview. “I made a point that a lot of people thought and weren’t willing to go forward on. I think that’s something that needed to be done.

I'll bet he saw the thread on HF Boards then wrote his article. What a ****tard.

I think this whole argument is practically shot down. I think what most people have a problem with is that it seemed like an "unnecessary PR move". But now that he has stated that he was asked to go, I think that changes everything... He really can't say no.

I agree with one of the poster above... It is ridiculous that Simmons won't admit that perhaps he was wrong, the guy is too headstrong.
and Rick Dudley.

we've got one of the greatest back offices in the league.

Seconded. There are certain times when standing up and calling out a specific person are entirely called for.

I happened to turn on the TSN show this morning and some guy named Macarthur was hosting, Simmons was on for a segment and he was laying into the leafs for signing Connolly, there were inferences of what I felt were leafs inability of getting Richards and Leafs fans were simpletons for accepting this move as a productive weekend, no credit for the Franson trade to Nonis or Burke, he was probably mad Leafs actually accomplished something with Burke in Afganistan, he just couldn't bring himself to admit it. I never thought much of him to begin with since he is a columnist, maybe it is his job to get responses but I sense something personal going on with his slanted columns and tweets. Pretty much everything he said this weekend was below the belt, I only wish I didn't tweet Damien to lay off the punking of that airhead Simmons.

Why would Burke think he is so popular that soldiers would want his autograph? And why not go some other time? Because he loves the attention he gets from the media. He is a media *****. And if he really wanted to entertain those soldiers over there, he should've made some big signings lol . Deeply offended my ass.

I agree Schenn would be cool, but why would they want to hang with a yankee lawyer?

It was a poor comment, a comment that makes Simmons look dumb.

The worst bit is how he remains defiant and sticks with what he said. Just indicates the fact that Simmons is a total clown.

Why is Toronto stuck with "journalists" like this guy?

Are you just trolling or what? Did you not read the article? It says that Burke didn't ask to go, but was ASKED to fly over there and he graciously agreed. He didn't have to do it. He didn't talk about it either.

It all goes back to Burke publicly embarrassing Simmons and making accurate comments when he claimed the Toronto Sun was only good for cleaning up pet droppings.

It is quite clear that Simmons now has an axe to grind and his shots at Burke are totally biased and just some weak-handed revenge ploy. I don't think I would be thrilled if Burke decided to go to Hawaii to party up on July 1st, but I think going to Afghanistan is part of his job.

Not only that, but I think we all know he is more of a figurehead and the spokesperson for an executive team rather than a one-man show. I think Burke is more of a "big picture" and "team philosophy" kind of guy in our organization. He knows what kind of players we need and the direction the team should know, but the real legwork is done by the two Daves, and then our capologist Loiselle handles contracts, and Rick Dudley probably will be given a role as some sort of internal check on talent evaluation.

Yes he is all of these things...

...but he was also asked to go.

And on Canada Day, perhaps second only to Remembrance Day, if you're asked to go, you ****ing go.
