That's not what a signing bonus is. It's essentially salary under a different name in order to validate the contract, the player will get it regardless of how they play. You're thinking of bonuses put into ELC if you reach statistical plateaus, win awards, etc...

That's only performance bonuses, and most players are ineligible for them.

Yep. Performance bonuses only apply to ELC contracts, 35+ contracts and special circumstance contracts where a veteran is returning from a significant injury.

All that a player has to do to earn a signing bonus is sign on the dotted line.

Flyers will likely get a fine and will be told to re-structure the contract so that it fits within the cap-rules. Its not a blatant circumvention of the cap (like Kovalchuk's contract). Just an idiotic mistake by the Flyers organization and Talbot's agent.

I didn't see it clearly debunked so I'll just say it -- signing bonuses count toward the cap just like regular salary.

No need to penalize the Pronger contract. It counts as an over 35 deal, which means even if gets abducted by aliens, his cap hit counts 100%.

Blame it on the idiot person who came up with the contract for Talbot, then he can blame it on the goose, blame it on the vodka.

Signing Bonuses (and Roster or Reporting Bonuses) are treated exactly like salary as far as the cap is concerned. They are included in the average for the cap hit (total of salary + bonuses / # of years) and count towards the 20% max salary and the "100 Percent Rule", just like regular salary.
