Burke To Have Contract Discussions Today With MacArthur

Brady and Lang mentioned it this morning. Said we'll know by the end of the day if MacArthur and possibly Bozak will go to arbitration.

Also said Burke wants to get a deal done with both because he doesn't like the decision to be out of his hands, so if negotiations go well we may see these two signed by the end of the day.

IMO, it's not the end of the world if we can't resign Mac.

I think Kadri would fit nicely on that wing as a replacement.

What do you guys think is a fair $$/term for Mac?

3.75 x 3?

One year at 3 million. Prove you're not a one time wonder and Burke will give you a fair deal.

Something like that. 3 years with probably less cash. 3 or 3.25. Mac shouldn't be close to making 4 million a season.

Edit: Also no NMC. If he is a one time wonder we can send him to the minors or trade him or whatever.

Maybe 3. For one or two years. Prove that this season wasn't a fluke.

He's not going to get a three year deal. I think that's too long for Burke to take that kind of chance on him. It's tough for Mac to really expect the type of season he's going to have, let alone three.

It will be interesting, that's forsure.

We've got significant cap space. I would expect it to go like this:

Schenn: 4 million/yr long term

Bozak: 2 mill/yr 2 years.

MacArthur: 3.5/yr for 1 year. Or 3 mill for 2-3 years.

An arbitrator would give him around 4.5M so you have to think his agent is not going to leave 1M+ on the table for his client. So Burke will have to pay up or offer a long term deal.

If MacArthur gets $4.5M for one good season the arbitration system is seriously flawed

I can't see Burke getting strong armed by a player who's had one good season. If he's not signing on Burke's terms then he's getting traded.

I am fine with 2 years, anywhere from 2.8 to 3.5 per.

I don't think we are gonna have to worry about Mac. This guy will bring it next season and people won't be giving his contract much thought.

IMO, Grabovski should be used as a comparable for our team. He shouldn't be making much more than him. I'd give him 3 per year max.

If Kessel is worth $5 million after one good season, then Mac should get at least $3.5 million.

Yeah, but who do u think is the better player between him and Upshall? if Upshall got 4mil/per then I absolutely think MacArthur deserves at least that much for lets say 2 years.

If that's the term and money then I think this could be a very good signing for us. Seriously I think MacArthur is criminally underrated around here.

Never missed a game either.

Burke will give him an option, 1 year at 3.5mil, or 3 years at 2.1mil per year.

It'll be Mac's decision.

Evidence of UFA signings is inadmissible in the arbitration process. There's no way he'd be given a judgement as high as 4.5 per. There was a poster the other day that put up some really great comparables in terms of RFAs coming off of breakout years and the consensus seems to be an award of anywhere from 3 to 3.8 (max).

The real problem with letting him go to arbitration is that we then only have him under contract for one year and at the end he's a UFA (26 y/o) which, if he turns out to be the real deal, could cost us some serious coin a season from now. Maybe it's better to give the better term, say 3 years, and eat up a few of his UFA years at a lower hit ... something like the above posters are thinking in the Grabovski range.

UFA is the key there.

Players in RFA under team control have a LOT less bargaining power. Arbitrators account for this, knowing that the player doesn't have the oppertunity to go to the market and take the contract from the highest bidder.

Mac wont get that much money for one good season, they look at the entire body of work.

He was ruled at 2.2 last season. I would expect that to incrase by less than double. If I had to guess, the ruling is going to be somewhere between 3.5-4. Worst case scenario Burke signs him to a 1 year deal at that price with the opportunity for him to make more in the future.
