Kaberle

OK, just hear me out.

We have $13 million in cap space this year, and $20 million next year (and our only big signings/re-signings would be Lats & Granlund). Our defense is likely our weakest position this year, and in the coming years. We have the following players under contract for the short-term:

Heatley (3 yrs)
Setoguchi (3 yrs)
Bouchard (2 yrs)
Backstrom (2 yrs)
Zidlicky (2 yrs)
Schultz (3 yrs)

Plus Koivu will be 28, 29 and 30 years old in the next 3 years.

What are the arguments against signing Kaberle for the next few years, say a 3 year deal, and making a little mini run at the playoffs and/or Cup? He's 33, so I don't think we'd have to offer much over 4 years, and made $4.125 million on his last contract. Why would a 3 x $5.5m offer be bad thing?

Russo's tizzy from earlier in the day regarding Kaberle not withstanding...

I just don't see what others see in Kaberle, I guess. Never watched the Leafs extensively so my opinion of him comes from International play and his stint with the Bruins. In International play, I felt Zidlicky was the better all-around defenseman of the two. Which made me never want to see the guy in a Wild sweater.

And Kaberle's run with the Bruins was just horrid, in my opinion.

The Wild are definitely lacking on the back end. I'd like to see it upgraded, but it just isn't/wasn't there for the taking during this free agency period this year.

I don't want Kaberle unless he can be had cheap and short. I think Zidlicky does what Kaberle does better.

Oh god no. I'd rather we grab an out of shape, 40-something from outside the X before the game and have him suit up instead of Kaberle.

I guess it's not really what I see in him as a player, but I don't know what the harm would be. We wouldn't ruin our flexibility salary cap-wise, and it would only be a short commitment. I mean, guys like Burns, Suter and Kronwall (the biggest 3 potential UFA's in 2012) probably won't make it to the market. Are we content on waiting until after Koivu's prime (or even his retirement) to make our run? I don't know, I guess every time I look at our D situation, I get less confident.

I think your argument is solid, but your numbers are way off. I would be willing to take a chance on him for Zidlicky's contract but 5.5 isnt even close in my mind. If 5.5 is what it would take, then i want nothing to do with him even if its a 1 year deal.

I do remember when Toronto fans were pimping Kaberle as underrated and a top 10-15 defenseman in the NHL.

Yeah, I just assumed that he hasn't signed yet, so he's probably waiting for something > $5m. I agree $5.5m is pretty high and would kick up a pretty big **** storm around here. At $4m, I would definitely think about it.

Then they robbed Boston on a rental and the Bruins won the cup despite Kaberle's efforts.

I'll take Zidlicky at $4 over Kaberle at $5.5. Don't get me wrong, Kaberle would be the best defenseman on the Wild but that speaks more to our blue line than his talents.

3 years? I could live with that. I just dont want to see any insane deals at like 7 years for a bajillion dollars. We dont need to fall into that trap.

Right, the $5.5m was a huge over estimation on my part. 3 yrs x $4m per? Not too bad...

Well, he's 33, so I hope he's not expecting a 7 year deal.
