I'd offer him 15 million over six years.

Arbitration is the line in the sand...I hate the agents in this process...that being said, I don't think he will go to arbitration, and will sign a 3 year deal, worth around 8.5M total dollars.

Marc Methot signed today, a 4 year deal worth $12M. That's $3M per year for a D who was +2 and had 0 goals and just 15 assists.

Josh Gorges has elected for arbitration after hearing about this signing.

The sad thing is that some bottom feeders are awarding contracts that are nuts just to reach the floor, and that invalidates the whole arbitration process.

No it doesn't. Market value is what you pay for comparables, and if a player from these bottom feeders was completely equivalent in skill, performance and cap hit then he would be tradeable with Gorges.

It's equivalent to the food service economy in montreal, where a lot of fast food joints would love to pay less than minimum wage, but cannot.

I'd love to see the Habs offer Gorges a multi-year deal, as I am a HUGE fan of his, but I would like it if they started off with a one year contract first. We still don't know how he'll hold up after the surgery and if he isn't the same as he was once before, so for one year they would be able to re-evaluate his play and then discuss a possible multi year contract.

Then again, maybe locking him up now would come cheaper, rather than watching him possibly have an amazing year and demand more money the following year.

A really tricky situation.

Plus, he'll be a UFA after next season, which isn't good when you see this year's UFA signings and re-signings.

I say multi year deal, if possible...

I don't get your point at all.

Two players might be comparable, but the reason one players gets a ton of money is purely because of circumstances where a team is forced into doing everything it can to reach the cap floor.

The concept of market value is completely different from the concept of minimum wage laws. I fail to see how it's equivalent in any way.

You either missed my point completely or I did...

I suspect we'll see something in the $3 Million range for a 3-4 year term. Anything longer then that at less then $3 Million is absurd.

3M on a 3-4 year deal for a purely defensive player who isn't physically intimidating, has zero offense and is coming off a pretty severe injury is what is really absurd here. Gorges really gets overrated around these parts.

Which brings us back to the Methot contract. I really don't see how Gorges could accept anything less than that.

I doubt he will be signed for more than 2 years. 1 year is what I expect.

How can we complain about that considering the contract we just gave Cole...

Outside of habs fans, with our understandable desperation for a gritty top 6 winger, hard to find anyone who doesnt think we overpaid for him.

Nope, using Finger as a measuring stick Gill would make 5m, Gorges 8m and Markov 12m.

Doubt arbitration awards him anything longer than 2 years. Seems to me I'm used to seeing 1 and 2 year contracts "awarded", but not so used to seeing 3+. I'll predict two years, but I don't even know what to expect for price; other than I might expect a 1 year deal to actually come at the cheapest price tag (not that it should matter).

Cole is an UFA, and we have to give 0.5M more due to taxes. That only applies for UFAs.

Even more absurd would be to not keep him, and the go out and have to pay a ufa premium to replace him with an equal/lesser player.

If the Habs medical team conclusively agree that he'll reach a full recovery, we should b locking him up for 4-5 years if possible at anything around 3M (ideally a tad less, but I'd even go as high as ~3.3 to get it done). Odds of replacing him/what he gives us, for less than that over that span are slim-to-none imo, but knowing you have a heart&guts defensive top-4 player with strong leadership and a great work ethic (not too mention a track record of steady improvement likely to continue) is well worth 3M$ a season, and unlike Cole's deal, is more likely to b more valuable as the years go by.

Yes, and that's why it's better to lock up an Rfa for a few years into his ufa status than it is to nickel & dime him with 1year Rfa deals, encouraging him to seek the big ufa pay day as soon as possible, leaving us to fill the spot with an external UFA that we need to overpay anyways.

Was hoping for something like $2.5m over the next 4-5 years, but thanks to Columbus we'll probably see the same contract as Methot.
