You forgot our future captain Sjogren.

Also I would like to see Grabovski here =) That may be very interesting... Dynamic forward who can work in all situations.

PS: I thought Martinek/Skrastins already signed in Europe. Checking... Oh, only Skrastins so far.

Got it.
To be perfectly blunt, if they can afford Semin as a secondary scorer this year, he's a better option than trading him for somebody who's a step down. "Getting nothing for him instead of getting something for him" is the philosophy of a rebuilding team.

He's an enormously frustrating player, but if you trade him, it better be a Varlamov-like deal.

Also, according to Wyno, Brouwer's not filing for arbitration. Sounds like a deal's close.

But why? Is the deal close enough? He could get as little as Fehr I guess and maybe more.
Maybe it's not the $..Maybe he was just really pissed at Chicago for blowing the team up..that's what he said in the presser.. The truth huh, imagine that?

So is he still a jedi or what?!

It sounds like closer to 1,8M smth and maybe just 1 year for evaluation purposes, in my mind.

Either that, or he's interested in signing an offer sheet. Can't do that once he files for arbitration.

Not that I expect Brouwer to be the type of player that GMs are breaking down the door to poach, but you never know.

My guess is he knows electing for arbitration eliminates his chances of getting an offer sheet.

The free agent market is on roids this year. Look at what George did alone as proof. has he had a more active summer?

I am surprised there aren't more offers being made for RFA's. Maybe next years deep draft has GM hording picks hesistant despite drooling for someone like Alzner.

offer sheets on rfa's require a max offer for the player. meaning there are no bargains and its more than likely that you end up with a bad contract. offer sheeted players are almost always overpayed. its a last resort sort of thing

Yeah but teams aren't just going to offer sheet someone unless they think they think that offer sheet has a really good chance of not being matched.

Well...I could see someone doing to Alzner what San Jose did to the Blackhawks that year with Hjalmarsson. Something like that could really screw up the Caps plans at this point if they decide to match or not match the offer.

Brouwer signed. Just the two remaining RFA seasons in the deal so it should be a manageable cap hit.

http://capitals.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=568673

Edit: $2.35M, lower than his stated demands with CHI.

Not to say Alzner isn't a higher priority, it was probably easier for GMGM to let things settle before really getting into the specifics. I'd assume they have the leg work down and need to iron out some details.

Iím going to work-up a more exact number at lunch time, but including this number for Brouwer, the off-season current estimate I have is:

off-season cap calc. estimate $67,660,000
off-season max: $70,730,000

Note: This includes Alznerís QO (and Perreault's QO pro-rated) so thatís approximately 4M cap hit to work with for Alzner even before someone is moved, if they go that route.

Better idea of $ #Caps need to move now. Subtract Poti = about $807,000 left for Alzner. Give him $3.0 million = $2.2 going out the door.

Daily job responsibilities getting in the way of players salary cap expert?! Just wrong.

That's weird, Eric Fehr makes exactly 2.2M...

Possible franchise defenseman coming off his first season in which he was the top pairing shutdown guy (and damn good at it). It's going to take longer....

If you move Jason Chimera and D.J. King, you got $2.5 million.

But the Caps have too many easily moveable parts that they aren't going to have to choose between keeping guys they ideally want to keep. They aren't in a Hjalmarsson or Niemi, in addition to already having moved plenty of guys, situation.

Someone would have to give Alzner a huge deal before the Caps would have to consider between him and another actual difference maker and that just isn't going to happen.

Ok, this is only related to the off-season numbers, but here are my calculations for the off-season:

$65,871,795 roster and other one way players including Brouwer
$233,333 Sloan buyout
$324,649 Perreault QO pro-rated
$291,704 Pro rated 6 others (Holtby, Aucoin, Potulny, Sabourin, PMcNeil, Collins)
$826,875 Alzner QO

$67,548,356 sub-total

$70,730,000 off-season max

$3,181,644 Difference; note inlcudes Alzner QO so it's this estimate plus his QO estimate to determine off-season room remaining.

* Pro-rated on a 185 day season for 2011-12, using capgeek days on roster for last season and 2011-12 cap hit for the pro-rated players; if I'm off by a day then it doesn't change by much, but that's my count for the days in this coming season.

** I need to re-read and confirm it's 2011-12 cap hit (not salary and/or 2010-11 info.) used for pro-rating, but it won't change by much regardless. Don't see any players missing for the pro-rated information, but it there was another player on an NHL roster last season and under contract with the Caps for 2011-12 please let me know.

I've always wondered if Alzner would try to stick it to the caps based on how his "development" was handled his first two seasons as a pro.

Really though my gut feeling is that they're working on a long term extension...because the other option is to put together a cheap extension taking him to arbitration eligibility. And that shouldn't be difficult.
