If you offer-sheet Stamkos you challenge and agitate the Tampa organization into perhaps matching the offer.
A sign and trade works much better then trying to deal with the raminfications of being 5-6 million over the salary cap.

Mathematically possible

TB has a week once Stamkos signs the offer sheet. If we submit one and he signs it, there's no way it stays quiet.

I do beleive flyers have a great core of kids and will be elite in the comming years, but your point is flawed and illogical.
Someone was comparing the team with Stamkos to the team before this offseason... I was simply saying it would be a net win...apparently you don't think so?

On the 1st two lines, you would have a JVR-Stamkos-Giroux line replacing JVR-Roo-Carter and a Hartnell-Briere-Jagr line replacing HBL. Both of those are improvements. Pretty big improvements, actually.

On the 3rd line, we would have Voracek-Couturier-Simmonds replacing Versteeg-Richards-Zherdev. Voracek is better than Versteeg. Simmonds is better than Zherdev. And Couturier is obviously not as good as Richie, but he has a bright future... and improving 2/3 on the 3rd line ain't bad.

And the 4th line is upgraded too, as Talbot is better than Powe.

On the defensive side, we'd lose 1 year of Carle (he is a UFA next year), but we can easily replacing him next year via free agency. For this year, replacing him w/ Barts/Gustaffson obviously hurts a little, but it's something this unit could easily withstand, as we have a very strong top-4.

And in goal, well, I think that's obvious... we made a major improvement. If we traded Bob, we wouldn't necessarily have the goalie of the future anymore, but that's OK. I can hardly see Bob supplanting Bryzgalov within the next 2 years, and I can hardly see Bob signing here as an RFA when his contract ends unless we pay him like a #1 goalie (and he'd still be our backup). As much as I like Bob, we're going to have to end up dealing w/ this situation @ some point... might as well be now, when we can get a player of significant value in return.

homer is got to be up to something, because he's actually got some cap space, and there is no way he's going into a season with a decent amount of cap space. If he really wants space next year, why not sign a vet fwd to a one year higher salary deal. Courturier will be ready next year, and give you cap space to get a younger stud D. Though that shows the ability to think past the current season, so that's never gonna happen.

It COULD work.
I DON"T think it's going to happen, but it can.

LOSE Shelley (ahl?), Carle(trade).
Scheen to AHL.

We could offersheet Stamkos RIGHT NOW for roughly $9 million. This number is missing Schenn, but he only counts for roughly $300,000 or so on the cap since he only played 8 games last season.
You're missing Matt Read's 1 way contract ($900,000). And Backlund's 1 way contract ($800,000). You've also failed to include Simmonds @ the lowest qualifying offer (he's currently on our cap for $577,500) and Kalinski was also tendered for his lowest possible salary of $670,000. And Schenn was actually on the roster for 57 games (doesn't matter how many he played) so he actually counts against the cap for $962,258.

All totaled, you've ignored $3,909,758 in salary, thus we currently only have $5,627,980 in cap space and could not have already offer sheeted Stamkos.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Doesn't matter how long it takes them. Look at the Bobby Ryan situation last year.

the Flyers have 5,077,739 in capspace with Simmonds yet to sign and Talbot off the books for now. This does include the Laperriere contract.
The Flyers do not have the capspace to send an offsheet for Stamkos.

got the info at capgeek.

The three teams most prevalent in Stamkos rumors continue to be Philly, Toronto, and LA... all via trade and not offer sheet....

In Toronto you hear it would take Luke Schenn, Kadri, +...
In Philly it would take Brayden Schenn, Couturier, possibly JVR +....
In LA it would take Mike Richards, Jack Johnson, +...

Ek..........

Clueless much?

The Flyers can sign Stamkos to a $9mill contract right now and not violate the CBA due to tagging space. Even with Lappy, Walker and Leighton on, we still have over $9mill we COULD use.

A Stamkos deal would however require us to move players around to get under for October.

capgeek shows we have 5 million and change with Leighton,Walker off the roster and with Simmonds and Talbot yet to be put on the books.

Guess we can always trade Hartnell and Carle for a 5th round pick.

LA and Columbus would be willing to take Hartnell and Carle respectively actually.

Losing Carle would not be the worst thing that could happen, especially with Gustavsson available for 6th D.

I think we are stuck with Carle all season. I dont think Carle and Coburn will be on the team in 12-13, so Holmgren may deal his rights next June.
Pronger's injury/surgery put the Flyers in a tough spot regarding dealing one of our top 4 defenseman. Until Pronger comes back healthy, I dont think the Flyers even consiter dealing Carle. I am not sure they view Gus as a long term answer right now.
I am not sure LA. Cant see them doing anything else big until they get Doughty signed.

although i'm one who liked to toy with the idea of getting Stamkos i pretty much understand its not gonna happen. What i really think the flyers are doing is they will take the cap room into the season and maybe try to acquire someone at the deadline, or they are keeping that space open for a big name free agent next summer (Suter) i would love the flyers to get him and then when Kimmo comes off the books the next year go get Shea Weber.. haha I know its a pipe dream but that would straighten out our defense problems regarding them getting older!

Thanks for the correction.

Question: How does Schenn get an entry level slide if he is on the roster for 57 games?
