Good news indeed. Does this mean Schoeny is stepping down or otherwise lessening his responsibilities?

Cam Hope was the cap-ologist. Gorton is a player personnel guy. If Gorton has been promoted to take on Cam Hope's duties, it's a bad, bad fit. I HIGHLY doubt that is the case, however.

This is why I specifically asked about Schoeny.

Great news.

Gorton has done very good things in his career.

Gut feeling he will eventually be Sather's replacement. Not Messier.

Wait wasn't Gorton already in our organization in some capacity for a few years now? Scouting?

Gorton joined the Rangers as a pro scout before 2007-08. He was promoted to Assistant Director of Personnel before 08-09. Clark and Gorton run the personnel department.

So, according to Brooks, apparently Gorton is technically taking the vacant AGM title left by Cam Hope's departure. I hope they're hiring a junior guy to be the cap expert now.

Hope this guy becomes our next GM. Sorry Mess, but I don't think you're experienced enough yet.

I saw Larry's tweet earlier today

Quote:
Gorton replaces Cam Hope as asst GM. Not a shakeup. Schoenfeld, Mess, Risebrough remain on board. There is no "line of succession" 4 GM job
http://twitter.com/#!/NYP_Brooksie/s...53081833689088

Cam Hope was the Rangers AGM of hockey administration. He negotiated contracts along with Sather. Hope represented the Rangers in arbitration cases. Hope was the CBA guy. He had no personnel duties. He didn't scout players. Didn't talk to other teams about trades.

Gorton has experience negotiating contracts as the Bruins AGM and interim GM. Gorton does more than just what Hope did. When Don Maloney left,Hope was promoted to AGM and Jim Schoenfeld was also promoted. Hope was already with the Rangers when Maloney left for Phoenix. Maloney's job was split between Hope and Schoenfeld. Not really sure what Schoeny does anyway. He is or was the assistant GM who travels with the team as an assistant coach and follows the Whale when he isn't on the road. Doesn't scout. Doesn't negotiate contracts. Gordie Clark and Gorton run the Rangers with Sather.

Bruce Berlet

Quote:
Meanwhile, Jeff Gorton has been named Rangers assistant general manager, leaving Jim Schoenfeld with the titles of assistant coach and Whale GM. Gorton had been assistant GM with the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins, with his major accomplishments being the signing of standout defenseman/captain Zdeno Chara and acquiring goalie Tuukka Rask for Andrew Raycroft. Gorton was interim GM for five months before being replaced by current GM Peter Chiarelli. Gorton also led the Bruins’ 2006 draft, which landed them Phil Kessel, Milan Lucic and Brad Marchand.
http://howlings.net/2011/07/05/from-...ce-berlet-139/

The other guys are still on board but it looks like Gorton is the #2. He already runs the personnel department with Clark and has experience negotiating contracts. If the Rangers took him out of the personnel department to have him just do Hope's job, then that makes zero sense. Gorton is the new Maloney. They hire a new Hope to deal with CBA issues.

Notes & quotes: The team expects to formally announce Wednesday that Jeff Gorton will replace Cam Hope, who left the team after seven years in the front office, as an assistant general manager. Gorton, who was an assistant general manager of the Bruins for seven years, spent the last four years as assistant director of player personnel for the Rangers.

Zipay had some info on Hope last week

Quote:
Cam Hope, the team's capologist, told me he is leaving the organization July 1. Hope, a bright and amiable attorney, said he really enjoyed the people in the organization and the industry. He and his wife remain be in Manhattan for a bit, then have no definite plans. Both have family in Canada. "You only live once," he said.
http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey...-win-1.2990825

Capologist. Attorney.

Gorton has been on the job since last week. Calling Dupont to inform him about the trade. Clark drafted Rupp in 1998 for the Islanders. The Rangers signed him. Gorton is more than just replacing Hope as AGM.

Steve Bartlett, the agent for Callahan, who made $2.4 million last year, said he had not spoken with the Rangers recently, but said that might be because they had a new assistant general manager in charge of contracts, Jeff Gorton, replacing the previous official, Cam Hope.

Gorton is responsible for contract negotiations. He isn't being removed from the personnel side. Gorton is the new Maloney.

Excellent move by the Rangers. My only question maybe someone here can answer; was Gordie Clark consulted on this?

I always felt like some other posters that Sather should eventually be just the President, Gordie takes over as GM, and Gorton would take over all Player Development.

Still, Gordie is too valuable to scouting and Gorton is very important as well. Would much rather have him take over than Messier.

Agreed, no disrespect to Messier, but he's years behind these guys in what they bring to the table. If Mess continues to do the right thing and learn from these guys he will eventually earn a shot.

Judging from what Rangerboy just posted, sounds like he wants to relax and go do some fun **** with his wife instead of crunching numbers all day. I'm sure the Rangers paid him well, so hey it's a great time to go vacationing

Just odd timing. Why pick July 1st when that's the busiest time of the year for negotiating contracts?

that might be when his contract ended...it sounds like cam left on good terms so i'm sure they knew about it and the transition was being done behind the scenes well before that.

It would seem that Gorton's promotion and expanded duties do indicate he is being groomed as the next GM. Messier becomes President and Gorton runs the front office when Slats rides off into the sunset. Not unlike John Davidson and Larry Pleau (now Doug Armstrong) in St. Louis. I can live with that.
