from what i read he is not great defensively as show by his terrible +/- ratting. He is not so reliable in his own end. But taht is probably because he concentrates too much on his offensive skills. Perhaps he still has time to improve his game and become more rounded.

I just checked this dude out. Statistically he seems like a steal. Reason is prior to playing this offensively he was still a plus player, albeit in limited games. He improved his offense the next year but not quite as drastically and wasn't a huge minus. Then you look up his team this year and they lost more than they won. That likely means giving up more goals than they get on average. Most of the team was probably a minus. 5 players were a + the rest were even or negative, him being the worst one lol.
It's definitely some indication but a bad team no less. Back when he was a plus player in limited games his team was also a lot better:

Terrible +/- rating - lots of offense, not reliable in his own end, etc... sounds like another Canadiens prospect.
McFadden will likely not = Subban but if he's the hypothetical half that PK is then he would probably be not that bad.
I think the first development camp is more of coaching sessions where the young players learn how to train, to eat and all other requirements they need to take care becoming a pro. There is some on ice trainning as well but it may not be the first objective.
Maybe the number of players there is not that relevent.

If it's worthwhile camp then the higher the attendance the better.
The Montreal Canadiens took another step to improving their team by
signing JOSH MCFADDEN to a try-out agreement. MCFADDEN, 20, will attend
the Canadiens development camp this week and is expected to return for
Montreal's main try-out camp in September.
The Guelph native finished third in league scoring among defencemen with
70 points including 19 goals. The 6', 200 lb offensive defenceman
improved his defensive play in the second-half of the season and led the
Wolves power play to #1 in the OHL. MCFADDEN also recorded a positive
PLUS/MINUS in the second-half of the season.
MCFADDEN had options at the end of the 2011 season to join some East Coast
league teams in the play-offs, but the Laurentian University student
completed his courses, took his time and waited until after the NHL draft
to weigh his options.
"Josh really matured as a player in the second-half of the season and he
became a leader for us" noted Wolves' GM Blaine Smith. "Josh has always
been an offensive defenceman but he really improved his defensive play and
bought-into team concepts. I think the Montreal Canadiens have acquired
one heck of a power play quarterback."
MCFADDEN recently attended Wolves' Fitness testing sessions in southern
Ontario and finished in first place overall. He has never been in better
physical condition and he is determined to give professional hockey his
best shot. The Sudbury Wolves extend best wishes to Josh McFadden and
congratulate him on being named BEST DEFENCEMAN in 2011.
Still don't get why this guy wasn't drafted!! Sounds like he inproved a lot in the second half, was third highest scoring D in ohl, is in great shape, and is ready to turn pro. I would be shocked if he wasn't in Hamilton this season. We are the perfect organization to help him work on his defensive game. This guy looks like a huge steal!

Had I been given the rest of the week off, as requested, I would have been there. It really sucks, I wanted to be in attendance so that I could report everything I saw and also enjoy watching some of the guys in the Habs system.

I miss the days when dev camp was a big deal to Habs and when they thought the fans should have a closer look.
Not so long ago, there were way more prospects....you had the chance to see way more scrimmages...and people were allowed in the stands.
Now, not only you don't have the chance to see that many scrimmages, but you can't get in so you have to watch behind a glass and now they added a new difficulty for the very first time ever....NOTHING ON THE WEEKEND. You have no idea how frustrated I am. I mean, you go on the Habs site, and aside from the first day....do you see somewhere the days and the hours that those practices are scheduled at? Look at other teams websites and tell me who seems to take care of their fans....And it's not only the team....how about the journalists? Do you follow Twitter? Do you see what kluedeke29 is doing as we speak? Who else does that here? IT MAKES NO FREAKIN SENSE that a city that is suppose to be that crazy about hockey is getting so little coverage and exposure....
It's the summer schedule at work and I have Friday afternoon off so we'll see what I'll do. Though I have to sell my car and go to the SAAQ and have to comeback home with my wife so don't know how much time it will take me....so chances are I won't be able to make it....but like I said, we will see.
