Remember when Holmgren said the ideal would be to carry 8 defensemen because you can never have enough?
I'm holding him to that.
Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to keep Gustafsson in the AHL as the de facto 8th-defensemen-in-waiting so he can keep playing? He does no good sitting in the press box all year eating up cap space.

Doesn't surprise me, I told everyone watch for him, with his size and his time developing he should be ready to make the leap soon.
If he does show he's ready I would like to see him as our 6th and LILJA as our 7th. A pairing of Him and Meszaros would be monstrous.

I can say, from the videos posted on here, I was probably most impressed with Gustafsson, Wellwood and Holmstrom. They seem to move extremely well, use their size and have great control. Am I the only one on those deking things in the first video that Read looked really stiff? Even Noebels looked smoother than him.

Between yourself, another 2 boards I lurk on, and the guys I follow on Twitter that makes 9 or so people today who have mentioned they were impressed with him. Wouldn't it be something if we actually developed one these "he's a big guy" prospects? The dude is bigger than Pronger. You'd have to assume at his size and lack of experience he's a few years away but it wouldn't take much to be 2nd or 3rd on our d depth chart among prospects.
You can't really take away much that is useful about these players until the scrimmages, and even that is iffy
Eh, I disagree. You can see the players that are skill and those that are not. As a coach of a sports team, I find the drills as important as the scrimmages. You can tell the difference between those who are highly regarded on the team vs. those who are not.
Like the "bear" drill. Being able to hold a guy twice your size is an accomplishment. Yea, it doesnt that you can play in the NHL, but atleast you can see that the player can hold their own against certain other players.
Everything is iffy until they get a shot in the NHL. The thing is though, not everyone can get a free game to show what they can do in the NHL>

I am pretty sure, that is the point of a scrimmage.
I would say sparring is the equivalent in boxing. Not a full fight, but you practice what you would do in an actual fight.
First you say you cant truly gauge a player until the scrimmage, but then you say even that is iffy...
So which is it then?
Is the statement really that hard to understand? Scrimmages give you better insight into a players overall game then drills do, but its still not a real game and with a real game comes along a lot of other factors that are just not present in a scrimmage. Especially when you are scrimmaging against your teammates. Therefore, even that is iffy.
Up until a year ago I attended a lot of Flyers rookie camps and I will tell you right now that the information gathered from that is closer to useless than it is useful. There were countless players that impressed at these things and couldn't hack it
Hopefully, some of these guys will get a legit shot at staying with the big club. I wouldn't mind homer sitting on the cap space and giving some guys a good month or two.

BEARCLAW!!!! love to see him impressing at camp. i was surprised they signed him so early i thought for sure hed see the end of his ncaa eligibility.
