Not worried.

Staal and Girardi are veterans.

Sauer has been in pro hockey a few years now.

McDonagh played half a season in the NHL. So it can go either way.

Del Zotto is going into his 3rd year. No issue there.

Erixon the only inexperience Dman.

Del Zotto couldn't hack the NHL in his second year. He was below average to poor last season. He was also bad for at least 60% of his rookie year as well. Just because this is his 3rd season, it doesn't mean he is any more reliable.

I have to disagree.

Really, with his potential ability, he shouldn't really be an issue.

His defense still lacks. Who knows if the AHL has increased his defensive skills enough to allow him to make the team and stay on the team.

Also, his decision making with the puck.

It's still the same with Del Zotto until proven otherwise during training camp, pre-season and the regular season.

Erixon will be a rookie.

But out of that group Del Zotto will/is the only one who's defense is suspect.

Still not bad. Not worried.

I am less concerned about D. There are plenty of not as expensive options around. If you draw their performance on a trend line and they perfom up to it. That's fine. I am more concerned about F. There isn't enough scoring punch.

We need to trade MDZ while he still has value. Hopefully for a top 6 LW.

I'll be happy if he can just hold down a 3rd pair spot and chip in on the power play.

Not surprised to see you writing him off.

But go ahead join the rest of the group thats out there throwing MDZ in every trade proposal. He's 20 years old and people are giving up on him. He has the talent, it showed in his rookie season. You dont think this kid is working hard to make it back to the Garden instead of CT? Ugh stupidity.

I'll be shocked if he starts the season with the Rangers. Last season was a total wash for him, he needs to regain his confidence and play 20+ mins a night in all situations with the Whale. Valentenko and some cheap vet (hopefully Eminger) will be our 6/7 on opening night.

I sure as hell hope so......but with Erixon and MDZ its hard to say. He is a shot-blocking machine so he deserves a shot and he looked pretty good in camp last year.

I would LOVE to see:

Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
Valentenko-Erixon

Yeah that seems reasonable because I don't see how Erixon and MDZ both make it because it seems you guys are going to be in the hunt this year, and imo I think Valentenko would be a nice presence back there with his style of play, something you'd like on your bottom pairing.

He is the ideal bottom-pairing defenseman. Hard-nosed, gritty, hard to play against, hits hard and makes few defensive errors.

The only question is, will Erixon be able to play the right side? He is a lefty.

MDZ, Erixon and Valentenko are all lefties.

McIlrath, Kundratek and Pashnin are all righties but I dont think any of them are NHL ready.

He definitely has a shot. He'll also have to clear waivers to be assigned to Hartford if he doesn't make the team, so that's probably in his favor as a tiebreaker.

I'm more bearish on him than most here. I don't know if he's mobile enough to be successful at the NHL level. And if he is a good enough skater to play in the NHL, I don't see him as more than a tough bottom pairing guy. Not that that's a bad thing, just nothing special. People are also in love with his shot, which is very good, but he doesn't really know how to use it and doesn't see the ice well enough to be a fixture on the PP.

People touting his shot as a reason for him to make the team, IMO, should not be. He does have a good, hard shot, but it is inaccurate. He is a gritty, shot-blocking, warrior-like defenseman. I think his footspeed is blown out of proportion.

They may be waiting on the RFA group to be signed so they can see how much space they have left to fit a veteran defenseman.

Its been mentioned they would like some experience back there.

Valentenko sitting in the press box as the 7th does nothing for him. Its either play or go to the Whale and play more.

Eminger should be brought back as our 7th.

From what I've heard seen, is Anton Volchenkov a fair comparison, I watched him for a few years here in Ottawa, and he isn't the best skater ethier but he got the job done better then anyone.

Anton's the absolute upside for V-Tank.

Anton-lite if thinks go good, pylon who misses the net and can't keep up with everyone else if things go bad.

It might be. We'll see if he is positionally sound and good enough at anticipating the play to compensate for the subpar mobility. I'm certainly not saying he can't, just that I'm skeptical.

I'm also a bigger fan of Tomas Kundratek.

What I'm excited about is the fact that the people in charge of making these decisions throughout the organization will probably get it right.

If he's on the opening night roster in the top 6 his play will probably surprise us.

If he doesn't deserve to be here, he won't be.

You can have all the talent, but if you don't have the IQ to keep up with it, you'll be left with wanting more.

Del Zotto was our worst defenseman with GA/60 Mins (Team Average) and this is without him playing much on the penalty kill. The team GF/60 Mins is roughly at the same place as it is from MDZ on the ice. He's a liability defensively and I think he may have been rushed onto our team. I would've preferred the McDonagh route where MDZ could've stayed a year longer in Junior than come up for an AHL stint last season. Trade him while he has value in part with a package for a core player or an organization need, such as a LWer.
