You might check this out for info on arbitration.

It's not everything, but it's some of the stuff. It doesn't talk about not being to negotiate with other teams, but there's no doubt in my mind that's correct. Search any of the articles about NJ taking Parise to arbitration or Nashville and Weber. The team elected arbitration to prevent offer sheets. TB and LA don't have that luxury because Doughty and Stamkos haven't played long enough. The same thing could be an issue for Dallas next season with Benn. He's not arbitration eligible, and he could sign an offer sheet with any team if not signed before free agency.

I really doubt he would sign with another team (if we don't have him signed by then, of course), but if he did, I think that'd be worse than the Richards fiasco this year.

Even if he did sign an offersheet, i'm convinced we'd match.

Anyway, I'm sure ownership will be done by then.

That's what we thought last year at this time too though... That the ownership situation would be solved way before Richards' contract had to be signed...

I'm fairly confident I would actually cry if Benn were to leave the Stars.

Definitely a disconnect between Stars hockey and the rest of Texas outside of DFW. San Antonio and Houston both have basketball teams going during that time frame. For those that happen to be hockey fans, they are bandwagon and have no allegiance to Dallas.

Eh, I disagree with that to a point. There are many hockey fans in Houston and San Antonio (and even West Texas) with no direct ties to Dallas, but they like the Stars because they are the closest pro team. Same thing with Louisiana even.

But there's a disconnect between the Stars and the general non-hockey sports fan in the greater state. People who might tune into Mavs, Cowboys, Spurs, Texans or whatever games because it's the most interesting thing on that night don't have a lot of interest.

Because of that, the NBA lockout (if it happens) will be a very interesting situation for the Stars to find themselves in.

I have to say I'm pretty stoked that they are going to be carrying more games down here as the coverage is pretty dismal.

According to Cap Geek, Dallas didn't back-load a single contract this summer:

If you assume Ryder just took $3.5 in cash per season and my guess on Fiddler and Pardy is accurate, Dallas would have about $50.52 million invested in the team.

On Cap Geek, Ryder's contract has been update and shows Dallas will just pay him $3.5 million per season. Hopefully Cap Geek will update Fiddler and Pardy's info soon.
Quote:
Cap Geek is now showing Pardy's details as being complete, and it looks like he did not sign a back-loaded contract. They are saying he'll earn $2 million/year.
Cap Geek has Vernon Fiddler earning $1.8 million in salary per year (no back-load).

That would push Dallas' payroll to $51.42 million.

Wild's owner on possible new divisions.

“Our division would include the Winnipeg Jets, (the Wild), the Blues, the Nashville Predators, the Dallas Stars, the [Chicago] Blackhawks and maybe the Columbus Blue Jackets," Leipold said

I doubt there will be much change from the team's listed, when the divisions are official in December. It's nice to finally see the Stars in the correct division.

The only changes I can see are Predators to the East, which I don't think will happen. I think Columbus is headed for the East over Detroit, though both could end up in the East.
Colorado could be added to the division.

I would be happy with a division that looked like that. I also wouldn't mind being in the same division as the Avs; I've always liked watching them play for some reason.

If both Columbus and Detroit are heading east, is there another team coming back, or is the league going a 16/14 conference split like MLB?

Well Winnipeg, for one.

I doubt two teams would go to the East in the same year.

Yeah, Winnipeg coming West and either of Columbus/Detroit going East makes sense and leaves the conferences at 15 all.

But if both Columbus and Detroit go, you need two previously EC teams to come back to balance it out, not just Winnlanta.

That would be a cool division, we can build up a good rivalry with those teams. The biggest being Hawks, Minny and Preds. Also we can finally be in the right time zone which is a big plus! Not to mention anything can happen in that divison, it would be hard to predict who will finish where.

Am I the only one that likes some of the proposed southern divisions with us in that?

Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Nashville, Dallas, Washington.

For some reason, aside from Washington, the thought of being in a division w those teams just doesn't excite me ...at least compared to chicago, st.louis, detroit, etc

Exactly, I like where you're headed with that. Feels very old school Norris division-like to me.

I like the idea of Dallas in a southern division, but I don't think the NHL will go with it. I'd much rather see Washington, Tampa, Nashville than Minnesota, St Louis, and Columbus.

What? Why wouldn't you wanna see Dallas and a Minny game. We can create a heated rivalry with Minny. Their fans already hate us, it be interesting to be in the same division as them, they are always great games to watch.

I just find teams like Washington, Tampa, Nashville, Carolina, etc to be more entertaining than Minnesota or St Louis.

This. Minnesota is not a fun team to watch. I can't stand Columbus. Detroit is Detroit and the less their fans are in our area the better. I also have no love for St. Louis.

I don't expect it but the idea of us in the south isn't outrageous.

Yeah, that's not a good idea. Time zones. TV.

Which teams are entertaining to you at the moment is a totally transient proposition. I don't see how that factors into alignment at all.

Exactly. With most of the "southern" teams most away games would start at 6 o'clock Dallas time. That's better than 9:00 or 9:30 but is still not preferable to a division where most away games would be at 7:00 or 7:30.

The makeup of teams changes too much to prefer one team over another because of style of play.
