So, what I got out of this is that they are putting more effort into developing our young players? I must admit, I just skimmed through it, but if that is the case, that is great to hear.

Sean Burke is the man. I love Sean Burke. He did not MAKE Ilya Bryzgalov.

It's sad to see King step down. Excellent hockey mind. One o the best.

Great news for the farm though.

Sulliman and King gonzo (although King will still be "around") - do they run with a 2 man coaching staff or is there another addition to come?

Will Burke go behind the bench? It's been done elsewhere. He's a strong leader, and a highly respected individual. With all eggs firmly in the shoddy Mike Smith basket, it may be wise to have Burke right on the playing surface, in Smith's ear after every stoppage in play.

I would think as goalie and development coach they'd prefer to have him on the frequent flyer program stopping in with Visentin, Domingue and probably even McIlenney.

As I am prone to do, I'll throw out a couple of names if they do add to the staff.

Don Lever

Ronnie "Dawg" Wilson

Any rule against having a coach in goalie gear?

But I thought he was supposed to be the guy to transform Smith from 76 inches of stacked dog **** into a star, top ten starter.

Ah, ok. After reading the article it makes more sense, but still leaves questions. Burke is still the goalie coach but he also holds the title he held when he first joined the Coyotes staff before being named the goalie coach, Director of Player Development.

As for King, he's getting out from being a regular behind the bench and he's going... behind the scenes? Like, work with the Portland players "when his schedule permits." I'm glad King isn't completely leaving, but this sounds like like some sort of ease into retirement for him. Still in the hockey business, but less travel and more of his own boss I guess.

This still makes me think we may need another coach. Or maybe Tipp will keep it small and it will just be him and Playfair who are the real hands-on guys. Less heads, less opinions, less problems, more practice, more development.

Remember the last time we made a guy a "special advisor of yadda-yadda-yadda."? What... John Muckler was it? What the hell was that all about? We read the press release of his hiring and nothing. Is that still goin on?

Counting nickels, the league must have mandated saving money. Strange time for a demotion for King now that most league staffs are filled. Whoosh goes the toilet on this franchise.

Who ever said it was a demotion?

FWIW.... both Burke and King were out on the ice this morning working with the prospects.

King is a teacher.... a "dean" in hockey if you will. This is putting him where he can be of most benefit to the franchise. Developing the younger talent.

Add this with Maloney switching to Portland as an affiliate where "players can get more practice time" and it's easy to see they're building a successful system for the long term.

Very smart moves . I think this is what the young players need .. somone like King to oversee their development . Also it said King will spend time with the Phoenix coaches when his schedule permits . Most of his time would be spent in Portland .It also mentioned some scouting as well .

I don't really consider this a demotion ... But as someone said this might be a way of easing him into retirement . But either way , I think this is awesome for our young players .

Don Maloney might not have much to work with , but I really like what he is doing with what we have , and I think these moves are very positive for the organization .

According to Tippett, they play on hiring another assistant to be behind the bench and Dave has already talked to a few guys.

Perhaps King got tired of the travel. He's no spring chicken.

King will probably still do a fair bit of travelling. I wouldn't be surprised to see him doing some "eye in the sky" work for Tip in Phoenix in addition to spending some time in Portland. Probably a less demanding travel schedule in any event.
