Quote:
Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed defenceman Alexander Sulzer.

Sulzer, 27, split the 2010.11 season between the Nashville Predators, recording four points (1-3-4) in 31 games, and the Florida Panthers, collecting one point (0-1-1) in nine games.

He can play the right side, too. Looks like, he will spend most of the time in Chicago, but we'll see.

Anybody know his waiver situation (eg., does he have to clear to be sent back and forth between Chicago & Vancouver)? Good to have this kind of flexability (though I know nothing about the player).

He's probably signed to be your 6th/7th defenseman. He's 27, he wouldn't have signed to play in the AHL and Sulzer's been on a 1-way contract the last 2 seasons. Spent all last season with Nashville and some time in Florida before getting hurt. I've been following him for a few years and I can tell you he's a decent player. He's nothing special, but he's capable of playing even 2nd pairing minutes. He had a few games over 20 minutes last year and handled it well, so he's definately an NHL defenseman.

Just my input on what I've seen from him.

Ehrhoff clone, in that he has a big shot and can skate, but not much of a defensive presence.

Not exempt either way unless he's on a two-way with the AHL end worth less than $105k, which seems unlikely but would remove the need for re-entry waivers.

The Canucks are deep enough that he's probably like the #8 or #9 guy on the team. Still, as last year showed you can never have too many NHL-calibre d-men.

1) Edler
2) Hamhuis
3) Bieksa
4) Salo
5) Ballard
6) Rome
7) Alberts
8) Sulzer
9) Tanev
10) Baumgartner/Parent/etc.

Maybe getting sent to the ECHL will get Polasek angry.

Permanently angry.

With his frame and face, could be scary.

Assuming this is the case then unless Tanev really blows everybody away (and/or Sulzer has a bad camp) - I'm guessing the "plan" is to use Tanev as the "shuttle guy" (letting Tanev play a ton of minutes in Chicago vs 3rd pairing/pressbox duty here).

Have Sulzer, Rome, and Alberts battle it out for the #6 spot (with the "losers" - #7/#8 - sitting in the pressbox); or just have these guys move in and out (depending on the opposition). Won't be long before Salo gets hurt, so one of the two pressbox guys will see action periodically thru the season.

Remind me, is Hamhuis expected to miss time at the beginning of the season? In that case depth is going to be even more important.

ASSETS: Has good size and solid offensive acumen. Is particularly adept at scoring on the power play, thanks to a very good point shot.

That must be his AHL scouting report because he's never scored an NHL PP goal.

If he does it won't be too much. He hopes and expects to be ready for training camp.

I soooooooo agree on all three opinions.

FLAWS: Is inconsistent in the physical department, so he needs to step up in that area in order to maximize his NHL potential. Must also add more bulk.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Mobile depth defenseman.
I'm hoping for a more consistent & reliable than Baumer like player.

Good cheap depth, who has some offensive puck handling abilities, should help out when the defense goes through its eventual decimation throughout the season/post season.

What$ the moula he'$ getting?

My gut says this is a one-way contract, similar to the UFA deal Aaron Rome signed two summers ago. I think he'll stick with the Canucks as a 7th/8th D-Man and, let's be reality, he'll probably see a fair amount of playing time due to injury.

He sounds a bit like Nycholat in that he's a offensive d-man who hasn't been able to produce in the NHL.

Maybe Gillis believes this guy can be a heir to Ehrhoff. He seems like a solid 7th/8th d-man but what happens to Ryan Parent now?
