His last contract was a two year deal with a cap hit of $650K. Wouldn't expect this deal to be much higher. $850K?

Competition at camp, winner stays up, loser goes down?

Interesting, kind of sounds like he could be an NHL guy. The Canucks are really collecting defensemen.

Alexander Edler
Dan Hamhuis
Kevin Bieksa
Samil Salo
Keith Ballard
Andrew Alberts
Aaron Rome
Alexander Sulzer
Chris Tanev
Ryan Parent
Jann Sauve
Sebastian Erixon
Nolan Baumgartner
Kevin Connauton
Adam Polasek

You'd think something has to give as theres so many player let alone defenmsen that the Wolves have signed. We can dream that Gillis takes Rome away from Vigneault.

Why do people keep spelling Yann Sauve's name with a "J"...? Is there a new pronunciation (a la "Hod(g)son) that I missed somewhere?

Thats a good question, maybe too much 'J' names, Jannik, Jensen, FA - potential signing Janssen?

More competition for camp. I'm guessing (hoping) just like O'Brien last year that all these guys beat out Rome at camp and he gets shipped to SJ.

So you're telling me I keep committing one of my own personal pet peeves. Must of had Jan Hlavac on mind...

It never hurts to have more defensemen capable of playing NHL minutes.

Another defenceman prone to freak injuries. Someone gonna get stranded on the moon next (Salo). Weird story though:

Nashville prospect Alex Sulzer suffers injuries in brutal mugging

Defenseman Alexander Sulzer, drafted this past summer by the Nashville Predators, was brutally attacked and is currently still in the hospital.

Duesseldorf EG defenseman Alexander Sulzer was the victim of a robbing and mugging and will not play this weekend. On the night of Sunday, October 5th, the 19-year-old was robbed on the street in Duesseldorf and brutally beat up in the process. Sulzer was unconscious for over two hours following the attack. His serious head injuries have required stitches. In addition, Sulzer is suffering from serious swelling and contusions on several areas of the body. He will miss at least one week of practice and games. Further details have not yet been released.

Hey, I am from Düsseldorf, Germany and a huge fan of both, the Canucks and the DEG Metro Stars, the former team of Sulzer. I remember it very well when Sulzer was beaten up. A delicate detail must be told with this story. The assault took place in our local red light district .

Sulzer is a good guy. He excelled in the German League which brought him the draft-selection. I hope he can make his way into the line-up. Give him a chance.

Sucks? No. Overused? Yes. Hes cheaps, hes safe but doesn't really do any one thing well. Hes perfectly fine when used in the 6/7 role its when he gets moved into the 4/5, shares the same ice as the Sedins and a regular on the PK.

At this point it's a three way fight between Tanev, Sulzer, and Parent for who gets the 8th spot on defense.

Don't see Parent winning that battle.

Odd stats...

Great AHL numbers, low/weak NHL numbers... but not many games played. Is right-handed though.

Lots of D now at least.

Just got off the phone with Sulzer's dad who says the Canucks aren't showing Sulzer enough respect by theoretically slotting him in behind Rome and he demands that his son receive a NTC and be paid fairly in his next deal

If he actually has a good shot, his optimistic upside would be that he develops at a late age like Anton Babchuk and becomes a bottom-pairing guy who can use his shot on the 2nd PP unit. Gillis has a fairly good track record with these sort of acquisitions.

Probably means Tanev starts the year in the AHL (on the top pairing) if he doesn't blow the doors off the barn in September.

I see what you did there.

Good signing, I like that he can skate and has some offensive upside, but in reality he probably won't get to display that here. Unless AV uses him instead of Rome on the 2nd PP or something.

Spent all last season with Nashville and some time in Florida before getting hurt. I've been following him for a few years and I can tell you he's a decent player. He's nothing special, but he's capable of playing even 2nd pairing minutes. He had a few games over 20 minutes last year and handled it well, so he's definately an NHL defenseman.

Just my input on what I've seen from him.
AHL fodder to a 20 minute NHL guy.

Maybe he's ambidextrous! Or hockeydb is trolling Come to think of it, have there ever been any players that could use both hands to play?

Also, why do we need 8 D-men up with the team? Waivers? I'd also prefer Tanev to start in Chicago where he can learn to put up some numbers down in the AHL.
