wish it was for 4 years @ that cap hit but I guess Sauer is smart enough to lock himself up that long term....but glad we have him back.

I think if it were 4 years he'd be a UFA when the contract ended this way I believe leaves him with two more RFA years.

Good terms. Happy for Sauer. I've been a huge proponent of his for almost 4 years now.

And thanks to HockeyHillbilly for giving us the heads-up a half day before!

I expected something not unlike the first Girardi extension, but Sauer took a cut in an era where the cap is even higher. Kudos to Mike on the new deal.

My understanding is that he is still restricted when this deal ends, which is a bonus.

Good deal.

Wouldn't have minded seeing a 3 year deal even if it meant slightly more cash, but with a ton of prospect depth on D can't really blame them for hoping he's surplus to requirements by then.

Yeah, I think we all would have loved that. Though this is what the guy that broke this said last night:

Makes sense. I think this is a solid deal for both sides.

So based on what Sauer told our guy, it sounds like his camp was the one that wanted two years rather than three.

Excellent. Highly, highly underrated blueliner around the league (at least by fans). Extremely sound defensively, brings a nice edge and steps in opportunistically for the odd goal here and there. McDonagh is the more talked about player, because he's got more obvious skill - particularly mobility - but Sauer is just so darn solid. Hope he's a mainstay here for the next decade or so.

Great signing for Sauer. Well deserved.

Best part is, our top 4 (assuming they stay the same from last year) Staal, Girardi, McD, and Sauer are such cap friendly terms. Almost makes me want to cry. lol.

If he continues to grow he might garner 3 mil his next deal.

If he stays the level he is at now it might be closer to 2.

Still, a lot better for the kid then AHL money. I was sure he'd crack it and make an NHL team very surprised and happy, I just didn't think that it'd be with the Rangers. Tortorella is smarter than I gave him credit for.

Agreed. After endlessly touting Sauer's NHL-ready game for nearly two years, I had all but given up on him wearing a Rangers sweater. I remember a thread before the season where I said, "Sauer will be a very good defenseman in the league for many years, but I'm resigned to the reality that it won't be with us." Glad I was wrong on the last part!

well it is very similar to girardi's 1st contract...girardi at 24 years old signed for 2 years, $1.55 mil

Was hoping to pop on this morning to find a a new signing thread.

VERY happy to say the least, im a big Sauer fan. The guy just does the little things right and imo will only get more solid as his career unfolds.

This is a guy who on a good team can play on any pairing, and well. Thats a big advantage to a team. Especially at that hit. Is it 1.25 PER or 1.25 Total? Im guessing its the latter.

I wouldve loved a longer deal, but given his unfortunate injury history and his ability to earn more money in his next contract - this deal works out for both parties.

Good for Mike, well earned - for a little while there i thought he missed his chance. Kudos to him for sticking with it and having a great camp and season last year.

Honestly, IMO he was the rookie of the year for last season - and i am gigantic Step fan so thats saying a lot.

There were quite a few of us Sauer fan club members that were worried last summer he wouldn't got a shot with the Rangers. Admittedly, it was his waiver status that gave him a leg up on McDonagh and Valentenko coming out of camp. But, he deserves full marks for taking advantage of the situation and making the most of it. I expect even bigger things from him this year. Unlike MDZ, Sauer appears to be at a more mature stage of his career.
