[FLA/VAN] Shirokov for Duco

RT @OnFrozenPond: #FlaPanthers send Mike Duco to #Canucks for winger Sergei Shirokov

Sorry about the typo in the title.

Anyways if Shirokov has an out-clause in his KHL contract and Tallon offers him a roster spot he may even come to the training camp.

If not it's still a good move because gambling on getting Shirokov when he's around 25 is a smart move.

Shirokov is fast and has good offensive instincts. Last year at training camp he came in overweight but that was sorted out afterward and he's work ethic was worked on.

Along with that he was also given more defensive responsibility and he started to get better with it so his defensive game is developing as well.

Hate seeing Duco go but I guess he'd never get a chance with us. Isn't Shirokov a KHL bound kid?

We lost some AHL grit today. I don't know anything about Shirokov.

Like this one too, but I have loved what Duco brought when he was up with the big club. But Duco had no future in this club unfortunately.

He seems to be skilled. We traded guaranteed grit for potential skill in the two moves today.

I agree. Grit is needed but not hard to find. You guys have plenty of skill so it makes sense for you add some gritty depth for players you don't really have room for.

Shirokov's a gem. My last post from a few weeks ago was a Shirokov rant, hoping he'd crack the Canucks roster next season. Hopefully he decides to come back out west!

So if he doesn't make the team will he be going to the KHL?

That won't be happening. Everyone has to earn a spot now.
We would love him in San Antonio!

Vancouver's #3 prospect for Duco. The Russian factor weighs heavily on this trade.

Florida fans: what did Duco bring to the table in his brief NHL stints? What's his talent assessment?

Good bottom line energy/pest. Undersized but makes up for it with his heart.

So he's Rick Rypien? ... Without the fighting skills?

He probably has a bit more energy, and not close to the same fighting skill. Duco's a great sparkplug. I'll miss that about him.

Can someone explain how Duco wouldn't have a spot on a cellar-dweller in rebuild-mode, but would have a chance at making the Canucks?

Canucks have 11 forwards guaranteed spots already, not including Oreskovich, Mancari, Ebbett, Desbiens, Volpatti, and the rest of the farm. Duco will have to impress big time to even have a chance as a benchwarmer in VAN.

Guess you missed last Friday??

He may not have a spot, but he's a great spark plug. Not sure why you're asking us, though. Go ask your GM.

He's going to be a call-up for you guys in case you really get hammered with injuries, nothing more. Better than nothing in your guys' case, I guess. Since Shirokov was never going to play for you.

I like it for the Panthers, we really don't lose anything and if Shirokov ever comes back over then we have a potential skilled player. He may even come to training camp this year because he sees more opportunity here.

Love this deal ! I loved Shirokov way back when he was in the WJC, wished we drafted him.. He went late and turned out to be a steal

I don't know about the other guys, but Duco is better than Oreskovich, imo.
I think Duco is one of those players that since he's not highly skilled, GM's don't think much of him because his size isn't impressive either.

Realistically, he's nothing more than a 4th liner but I think he can be an NHL 4th liner and quite the fan favorite, as well. The guy is a pest.

With that said, nice trade by the Panthers. It's a good risk.

He's talking about last season - where Duco couldn't even play for us despite us throwing out an AHL team the second half of the season.

Hugh Jessiman played for us.

Love this trade. Love.Love. High potential reward with no risk. Duco's too small to be an NHL grinder. Love his hustle, but at 5'9, he's not accomplishing much.

Great deal.
