With the end of the cold war, they felt there were enough pilots stockpiled so they skipped a few years of slotting replacements.

The detachment I was in at the time was the #1 detachment (#357 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Dayton FL) for pilot placement and I was #12 in my class which averaged 22 slots per year. 3 slots opened up my year of eligibility. That's when I left and said I guess I'll go into marketing.

And look at me now - an HF Mod. Who woulda thunk it.
When I was 3 years old I dreamt about being an HF Mod so you are ahead of the game! . I went to UND for aviation...got my pilots license and promptly moved back to NJ because I got homesick and now I am in the IT industry. We all take different routes...lol .

If you life is anything like Mad Men...well done sir!!!

I went to school for air traffic control and got my pilots license. Got a job offer and turned it down to go back to school. Studied Biology and now looking at MBA programs and law school. Life can be weird.

Almost every single friend of mine is doing something different for a career than what they originally went to school for. I wish college would be a few years after high school just to let the kids get a little perspective on life before they start making expensive decisions that might not be down a path they ultimately want to take.

The Su-37 prototype did and so does the Indian Su-30MKI. What you see is just huge amounts of thrust climbing the pilot out. He was lucky.

If that was a US Navy F/A-18E. It would have crashed.

The reason why the Russian carrier Kuzenetsov has a ramp instead of the catapult is because they didn't need a catapult. The jets in service have sufficient amount of thrust to take off on short distance without one. Not many Navy planes are capable of that with full combat loads.

Thrust:Weight ratios for the F-18 are kinda sad. That's why I loved the F-15 so much. The Streak Eagle that set the records is about 4 miles from me at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB. Amazing what it did for it's day.

For 1975 that is jaw dropping. I don't know if the F-22 has broke all these since but it probably easily could have with those engines. 70,000 lbs of thrust in afterburner compared to 46,000 in the F-15 and greater than a 1:1 thrust:weight ratio

Damn. I know much more about helicopters so my bad.

And sorry to hear about that RG, everything in the military is all about timing. A couple years ago "everyone" could become a pilot, now its shriveling back up again. I'm stuck trying to get into OCS right now, its gonna be tough.

anyways tho, funny how a mark fraser thread turned into flight school/career choice thread. i guess we really don't want the guy.

If you grew up in West Virginia, you'd want to go with a name at least as manly as Chuck. Walkin' around them there hills with a name like Charles is just asking for trouble.
