Rangers Who Could Use A Bulk-Up

Artem Anisimov would probably benefit most from a bulk up. I'm pretty sure he's working on that this off season. Stall is listed at 6'4" at 204 lbs, I think there is a little room to pack on some more muscle, but I'm not sure if that would slow him down or if he's already at his suggested weight. Staal is fine as is, I'm just throwing that out there don't kill me lol. Who else?

Stepan could no doubt use a few pounds of muscle...but he's young and I'm sure he'll fill out a bit. He's currently listed at 6' 182lbs...he can certainly add 10lbs over the next couple of seasons.

I don't really want to take our arguably 3 poorest pure skaters in Boyle, Anisimov, and Stepan and add 15-20 lbs of weight for them to carry.

Not everyone plays physical. We don't expect Gaborik to bulk up, bulking up, slows players down.

See what this scout says about Rangers recent first round pick.
Quote:
Jonathan MIller: watched him alot since he was 15 since his days with Pittsbhurg Hornets- Midwest Elite League.. Excels in avery area of the game. Has great tenacity and work ethic, Great passer, speed ,shot and hits. Only negative is that he has bulked up alot in upper body. The trend in the NHL is the opposite. Take a look a Samkos.

There are young players on the Rangers who will naturally add weight as they get older, ie Stepan & Erixon however, neither will ever be a physical player. Someone like MDZ will always be small. That said, AA needs to fill out so he can go into the corners and win.

I have complete and utter confidence that Anisimov will add a few extra pounds and be even stronger. Remember, last summer he had that minor hand injury from the World Championships that didn't let him work out until early-mid July and even so, he definitely seemed stronger last year with better points production and board work.

As for guys who could bulk up; I'm gonna go with two prospects; McLIrath and Thomas. The first to become an absolute beast and even if he gets sent back to Juniors which is most likely according to plan, show he can hang with the big boys.

The later in Thomas to continue his strength and show he's "NHL strong" as Leslie Treff spoke about.

I recall reading about how McIlrath wants to naturally fill out his frame, rather then forcing it.

He's a teenager so that makes sense.

To me guys like Zucarello and Thomas need to force it and bulk up.

The way the Rangers play, they need to be able to handle a physical game.

Thomas could be stocky like his father was. Which helps.

Zuccarello needs to really improve his strength so he can handle paying in the corners.

I really hope Zuccarello comes into camp with a longer more powerful stride and better core strength.

His hands, creativity, and vision could be a HUGE asset to this team.

Thomas, Stepan, Anisimov, and Del Zotto.

Anisimov needs to fill out his frame. If he does, I'd hope he'd get more physical.

Stepan needs to add weight. He seems lanky and gets knocked around a lot.

Thomas will hopefully grow an inch or two. He does need to add weight to be NHL ready though.

Del Zotto needs to add just a bit to help prevent getting knocked around and to strengthen his ability to hit.

I'd want Boyle to be one of the more feared players in the league. He needs to be more physical and he'll be a much more valuable player. He was shut down in the playoffs and I think if he can gain footspeed and be a more aggressive checker, it would only benefit us.

He can learn to be a slightly better skater but the oldest rule in sports is that you can't teach speed. There's no chance of Boyle being one of the most feared players in the league. Be happy that he went from 2 goals to 20.

Not enough people think about that they think adding weight is always good and it's not.

Fixed. You can teach speed, improving the stride, strengthening leg muscles, etc. The problem is there is only so much you can improve skating wise until your body prevents you from gaining anymore speed.

More important than bulking up is strength on your skates, you don't need to be a big guy to be strong on your skates...MSL is a small guy who is strong on his skates.

I also seem to recall Dubsinsky saying a few years ago that he had bulked up but not in a way that helped him be a better hockey player.

This might sound crazy but i would like to see Dubi who seems to start the season strong physically, find a way to carry that more throughout the season. He seems to tapper of his physical play as the season get older and into the playoffs. I know it is tough to workout during the season but i hope he tries to carry somewhat of strength training during times off through the season as i found that quite evident.

Well i put on some wieght this year and playign hockey you really feel esp initially that added wieght. But your body somewhat adapts, you have more confidence strength wise. For AA i think he can benefit from a some strenght training for sure, speed will not always go down if does it right like work more heavy in the legs.

One guys who many have not talked about that i hope is not on the team is WW, now this a guy that could benefit from bulking up and working on his balance and speed.

You have to be careful about bulking up. You do it too quickly you're going to lose foot speed, agility, etc. It's very important to focus on different muscle groups for hockey. Not everyone can be Milan Lucic and be that size and still move.

If it were as simple as saying "hey Anisimov, Boyle, go bulk up!" do you honestly think the trainers wouldn't work with them and it wouldn't happen?
