ASSETS: Moves the puck with aplomb. Has sound defensive instincts and a history of putting up numbers at lower levels. Can log a lot of ice time.
FLAWS: Can lose battles in front of the net and in the corners, mainly due to a lack of strength. Is somewhat inconsistent, especially in the offensive zone.
We're giving up on DZ already? Valentenko? Pashnin? Kundratek (I guess you can throw Niemi's name in there as well)?
Sather's only focus should be geared toward signing Dubi and Cally and try to forget about Lepisto (not unless their minds are set on going through the arbitration process if both parties are that far a part).
No, not giving up. Giving him time through a transfer window maybe. Still do not see the use of another Left D at the moment.
Here is some more info if interested - Sami Lepisto

I'd think that if the above mentioned guys play well enough in camp, then the Rangers will find a spot for them on the NHL roster- if not at the beginning of the season then maybe throughout the course of the season.
He wouldn't necessarily be an "upgrade", but he has more upside, and helps fill somewhat of a need, as he'd be the team's 2nd best puck mover.
Well put.

On the other hand, I think his size was less of a concern than it was when he was drafted. He's one of those guys who is good at most things, but doesn't really stand out. He's had some good international tournaments in the last few years, though, and I think there's room for some improvement if he can be a little more aggressive.

capgeek says we have around 12+ mil left in cap space. I say take care of both of these "core players" first and if Sather wants to, he can jump all over Lepisto for all I care.
I didn't know Lepistö passes to the other team and doesn't play defense.....he is far from another Rozsival
Michal Rozsival was a relatively young defender, decent at most things, great at none, that Sather picked off the UFA pile for cheap. Sound at all familiar to Lepisto? The hope with Rozsival was that his offense would begin to flourish...which it did, if only for a few seasons. I'd think the hope is the same for Lepisto.
But yeah, Rozsival sucked and was terrible at everything always. For sure.

Not giving up on anybody, this is a move for depth and insurance. Any GM makes this move no matter how much depth or competition they have for roster spots.
Also, no GM works on one contract at a time... Sather could be working on Dubi an Callahan right now and told his assistant GMs to talk to Lepisto.
Watched him while he was in PHX. Started off as a bit raw but had gotten much better and is a solid two-way guy. He was one of the top players on Finland's world championship team. He is very mobile as well and i think would fit in nicely with our guys. We'll see tho...i would like him to pick up his physicality a bit but solid defenseman.
I know everyone wants to put the young guns in and youth but this team must have a backup/contingency plan in case things don't work out. Lepisto is a proven NHL Dman while we have alot of dmen who have bright futures but who knows what will happen in training camp. Solid move by Sather.
some seem to think this is a good move and I honestly dont remember lepisto so I am gonna go on the concensus' hype and be happy we are on the "verge" of signing him
These reactions are priceless to a player they have never seen play. Just like Eminger. He sucks. Typical Sather move. Then its complaining about MDZ getting into the line-up over Emimger.

You'll know more about Sami Lepisto's abilities after one week in a Rangers uniform than you know about him so far. Same goes for Brad Richards, Mike Rupp, etc.
