Don't know anything about him, but that scouting report makes him sound like Gilroy

Maybe he is exactly Gilroy. So what? Gilroy was a good #7 who can fill in when needed. Lepisto will most likely be cheaper.

If the Rangers feel like MDZ is a coin toss, I can see why a player like Lepisto is an option under consideration. Eminger is great in his role, but if there's the potential for a rather significant hole in the lineup after camp, he's just not the guy you want to be a staple in your top 6.

can we please stop with the pmd/insurance for del zotto talk? last 2 seasons lepisto has played 136 games and has 5g, 27pts. he is matt gilroy with less offense

maybe its like poti when people used the wrong definition of 'offensive' to describe his play??

i'll keep eminger

How do you know Eminger is willing to come in and be a tweener again? How do you know Eminger is willing to take a pay cut from 1.4 he was making? How do you know Eminger is willing to come back to NY?

Not all of the facts are out. Maybe Eminger has decided to chase a lucrative offer in Europe during his prime years to set himself up in the long-run. If I was him, I would. He is 27 and has yet to solidify himself as a top-6 NHL defenseman.

I don't think it's the simple. There aren't many similarities between Lepisto and Eminger. If you're looking to fill a specific role, they aren't interchangeable parts.

We know that the Rangers made an offer to Gilroy, so, obviously, there's a desire to have a bottom 6/reserve player with his type of skill set.

Insurance in case MDZ doesn't impress in camp. Don't hate it, don't love it.

doesnt matter...by the end of the season he'll be a bench warmer and we'll have all of our kids filling the everyday spots anyway.

Agreed think it fills the need for depth, experience, competition possible trade leverage and who knows if he does really well a real contributor. Seems like a good move, and makes me think we will potentially be making a trade.

These are the kinds of moves that Sather makes that angers the whole fan-base. Why make this move when we have V-Tank, Kundratek in the mix?

I like this move if true.

Meh. I'd prefer Eminger for his style of play alone, seems like an ok option for the #6/7 spot.

How can you not like this potential move?

It's a pure low-risk/high-reward signing to add depth. What if Valentenko and Kundratek aren't ready? Why throw them into the fire if they aren't ready when you can instead put in a guy who has been in the NHL and has some upside? Any smart GM would sign a guy like Lepisto for their bottom pairing to compete with prospects and take their place until they are ready.

Lepisto isn't amazing by any means, but that doesn't matter. He is a solid option for the bottom pairing.

This is a good move if it is true.

I agree on the low risk part of that statement but there's likely no high reward here. He'll be 27 in October and I think what you've seen is what you'll get from Lepisto. If he's signed, it'll be for depth. Nothing wrong with that...but nothing to get overly excited about either.

There's not much else to talk about, I know...

To anyone bashing this move (who would also bash any move bringing in a vet dman cause OMG IT TAKES SPOTS AWAY FROM A KID!111)

This isn't NHL 11, we need a vet dman to play the 5/6/7 role.. If the young guys play well and overtake him, great.. if not, and we want to win games, you need that veteran presence.

Whether its Lepisto, Eminger, or someone else, it IS a need right now and it will be addressed.

We're not going to lose Callahan or Dubinsky because of Lepisto. They are both in arbitraion and the Rangers have a pretty good idea of the high end of what an arbitrator might decide.

I actually like the move. And I don't think it necessarily blocks any d-man from making the team. And if Lepisto loses the competition in training camp (not very likely)--we can always try to send him down after waivers to the AHL or move him maybe for a draft choice. In other words signing him won't cost us very much at all and at worst gives us the option to go out and get other assets.

Well it would be stupid to count on 2 rookies...
