I just found out that our third round draftee Steven Fogarty (for whom Evgeny Grachev was traded) apparently will refuse to go to the WHL, a major junior league, and will instead be headed to the British Columbia Hockey League, which is like a minor league of junior hockey.
The Rangers aren't pleased.
That's all I know. I will look for some headline to make it "confirmed with a link."

been discussed since this morning in the prospects thread.
Just a head's up, if he does this, he can become a UFA after his junior year of college.
I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Danny Hobbs was drafted in 2007 along with Hagelin. Hagelin just completed his senior year. Hobb is going into his senior year, yet we still own his rights.
It's not that big of a deal. He's committed to Notre Dame, but they wanted him to play a year of Juniors first. Which means either the USHL, or Junior A--the CHL, Major Junior, is considered professional by the NCAA, so that's not an option.
He chose Junior A in the BCHL over the USHL. While I prefer the more fundamental and two-way approach he'd be forced to develop in the USHL, it's not as if he's in a crappy league playing BCHL hockey.
The Rangers wanted him to play WHL hockey from the sounds of it, though that would mean he'd be unable to play at Notre Dame--which he seems to really want to do.
EDIT: And this post from RB seems to indicate it was the Rangers who suggested the BCHL as an alternative to the USHL.
What a loaded way of phrasing this. Clearly the kid wants to go to college.

If he was drafted, plays a season of sub-junior, then three years of college, he'd be eligible for that Van Ryn loophole. (Unless closing it in a new CBA is applied retroactively.)

Right. I think it's about playing Junior A after being drafted and before going to college, versus prior to being drafted.

well the article was write from the standpoint of the whl team that owns his rights...to them he snubbed them eventhough he was never considering playing for them in the first place.
This is not a big issue. Fogarty told the Rangers that he intended to go to college; he is committed to Notre Dame for the 2012-13 season. He played with the Chicago Steel of the USHL and, he was either to play there this coming season or in the BCHL (which may be the highest level junior A league in the western part of Canada).
The bigger story here is the preference of the Rangers for Fogarty to go to the BCHL instead of the USHL. I know Mario Lucia (high Wild pick) is going there this year as well.
Fogarty can become an UFA regardless of where he plays next season-BCHL or USHL if he drops out of school in the fourth June since he was drafted. That's in the current CBA which could change in the new CBA. Hobbs didn't drop out of school after his junior year. Jason Gregoire dropped out of North Dakota after his junior year and became a free agent and signed with Winnipeg. Manitoba boy. Drafted in 2007. Left school in 2011. Wheeler drafted in 04 and left school in 08. Both played in the USHL after their draft year and three years of college. The Rangers really like Fogarty. Gorton said they had him rated as a late 1st rounder. Traded Grachev for the pick used on Fogarty(#72)which was higher than Fogarty was projected to go. Jim Cerny spoke to Fogarty and he was surprised to go in the 3rd round. The Rangers took Stepan higher than he was projected. Looking at the Rangers staff, they don't have a scout with Minny roots to turn them on to Stepan and now Fogarty. Maybe Clark knows someone(retired coach or player) in Minnesota who watches Minnesota high school hockey and told them about these two players.

BCHL is just as good of a league, if not better than, as the USHL. I don't mind this. He is a 100% college player, so it's no wonder he didn't want to go the WHL route.

Not a surprise really... don't see why some people are getting their panties in a bunch.
Well the Bchl is known for a hockey leauge to prep to go to college. So College is more than likley his route. Keep in mind players like Kariya,Brandon Morrison,Kyle Turris,Glenn Anderson,Brett hull, mark Recchi have all played in the Bchl.
