Yep. But the USHL is the same thing. Just the American version. A number of good players have went the USHL route, too. It's just a matter of preference.

yeah but it was more fun to paint a picture of him being afraid of higher competition by "preferring" to play at a lower level

The Rangers aren't pleased.

That's all I know. I will look for some headline to make it "confirmed with a link."

He didn't refuse to go the WHL. You have your facts wrong. He wants to maintain his college eligibility, therefore he is playing in the BCHL in 2011-2012 and going to Notre Dame in 2012-2013. I'm sure that the Rangers would have preferred that he plays in the WHL, but they are the ones who recommended the BCHL instead of the USHL. The Rangers didn't want him playing in the USHL.

He better put up huge numbers in the BCHL. Here is a league that HS should dominate considering how few kids there have been drafted. Most of the league is either too young or not talented enough to be drafted.

A friend of mine plated junior A hockey in Canada and I can catch up with him. Our early pick should be able to score well over ppg there.

The Rangers wanted Fogarty to play in the WHL or the BCHL. Plan was USHL before the draft.

Fogarty wants to play college hockey but didn't close the door on playing in the WHL. Never know what happens.

Notre Dame coach Jeff Jackson had mentioned the BCHL as a possibility to Fogarty over the USHL

Fogarty asked St.Croix about the WHL.

Yeah I would've liked some Fogarty-St.Croix magic, but oh well.

A little OT

Why would someone choose college hockey > WHL or vice versa?

Just education or what?

You can go to the WHL after the BCHL. If the kid starts dominating and decides he can't wait to go to the NCAA (or doesn't want to) he can go to the Dub. No issue here, really.

I would say it's more offensive, but it's definately not a stiffer challenge overall. The USHL, while lacking the overall quality of the CHL is a very difficult league to play in and excel in.

Fewer games, more free time. Also you face better opposition in the sense that it's older.

Fewer games, yes, but more free time? That's highly debatable.

Education, playing against men, appeasing parents.

When I played Junior hockey and went to college last year, I did poorly and got my ass reamed by my mother

More free time outside of hockey. College studies can take time, but it's really voluntary for most students. You can do next to nothing in 99% of colleges and get more than the required 2.0 GPA assuming any intelligence whatsoever. Studying is what you do if you are looking to get your GPA above 3.0 and even then it's very little studying. Only the good students, those getting above 3.5 are really studying.

I am sure some of these kids do that. Stefan Cherneski I remember was something like the top student in Western Canada (don't remember if it were among hockey players only or in some competition among all students, athletes and otherwise), but there are plenty of them who do nothing, just go to class (occasionally) merely to get by.

while i'd love to see him play in the WHL and get used to a real physical brand of hockey they play out there, i totally understand why he's choosing to play at notre dame and can't knock him for that. i got real nervous when i saw this thread but i'm glad that it's him snubbing the WHL for college and not some lesser league
