I think that Drury, Dumont and Hannan would all be good fits in Montreal.

Try to trade Spacek or send him to the minors, maybe even waivers or a buy out, Let Diaz start in Hamilton and put Weber in the press box until there is an injury or a player like Gill is not playing well.

Cammalleri - Plekanec - Cole
Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Kosititsyn - Eller - Dumont
White - Drury - Moen
Darche

Markov - Gorges
Gill - Subban
Hannan - Yemelin
Weber

Budaj

For the 1000th time on this board, we have to remind a member that Spacek is on a 35+ contract so the ONLY way to have his contract off our cap is to trade him. Which would be a miracle at this point.

Dumont and Drury over Desharnais? Yeah right... They are just not that good anymore, having one of the two could work out but not both of them over Darche and DD.

Choices are 1) assume Eller will be ready, if wrong then you have to dip into a thin pool in Hamilton or 2) sign an extra cheap forward, if Eller comes back then having an extra decent player around isn't a bad problem

You did see his playoffs though right? He was one of our best forwards

Yes, but he's just had surgery. It's not incomprehensible that he physically won't be ready not just to start the season, but well into the season.

Right now any mock roster I'd consider would not include Eller. When he comes back, Eller gets a spot (I agree with the consensus that he centres the 3rd line with AK and some other forward) and you move one of White/Darche/Moen/DD/new guy out of the lineup. No biggie. Adding a cheap UFA forward now as a hedge beats trading picks to acquire a similar type of player in December.

Given the choice of problems, I'd rather have the problem of Eller coming back early and having too many decent players on the roster vs. Eller having a setback and trying to make do with the current roster and/or hoping for Enqvist/Pulashaj to break through.

I don't think it would take a miracle to trade Spacek, but what we can add as a UFA is not very attractive. I think had Hamrlik accepted our offer Spacek was headed elswhere. The only guy I can see as a uFA that we could upgrade Spacek with is Hannan. Guys like Stralman and McCabe are in the same mold as Subban Markov Weber and Diaz and don't fill a need. I could see O'brien added for toughness, but not sure he can handle 20-22 minutes per game in case injuries hit like Spacek has.

I don't think we will be moving Spacek at this point, if we do I see a team probably taking a chance at the trade deadline and that would also depend were we are in the standings at that point

That's what I want.

Let Weber/Emelin earn their spot, pushing Spacek outta the line-up.

with White signed today, id like to see PG get one more forward. A checking center who can work on the PK.

i propose Ryan Johnson.

he could be had for less than 1 mil prob

Played 34 games with Chicago 10-11. took 300+ faceofs with 63% win rate
Played 58 games with Vancouver 09-10. took 500+ faceofs with 52% win rate 85 blocked shots!

ASSETS: Has blinding speed and is a tenacious forechecker. Likes to get physical and play an energy role. Can play either center or left wing. Is a good face-off man.

FLAWS: Lacks offensive flair and struggles to put points on the board. Is also somewhat injury-prone and lacking in physical toughness.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Defensive depth center

Cammalleri - Plekanec - Cole
Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Kosititsyn - DD- Darche
Moen -Johnson- White
Eller

Markov - Gorges
Gill - Subban
Spacek- Yemelin
Weber

Price
Budaj

once Eller is back from injury, White and Darche can alternate, depending on other injuries.
He is not a flashy player, but could serve well on faceoffs and killing penealties. He is older which could help the younger players, but he will not play 82 games either so there could still be chances for Engqvist

a younger alternative would be Brian Sutherby

Agreed about Johnson...I also proposed his signing in another thread.

Would be a cheap alternative and wouldn't totally block Engvist (who I think the Habs have plans for) path to the NHL.

I don't want Kovalev in Montreal because I feel that we can give that spot to a younger, faster, cheaper player with more heart, I would rather try Palushaj or Avstin on the third line or another prospect.

Cammalleri - Plekanec - Cole
Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Kostitsyn - Eller - XXXXX

XXXXX = Kristo, Palushaj or Avstin

Trade Moen and have a fourth line of White - Desharnais - Schultz/Blunden

I like that roster, we improve from within with the exception of Cole coming to fill a role that none of our prospects could fill at that point. Pacioretty cannot do it alone, especially coming back from such a serious injury. I would add a veteran defenseman in case of injury or in case one of our young defensemen is not performing as expected early in the year. We have a very young defensive core for this year, and Markov needs to get back to game shape after having a year off last season. Perhaps a one year offer to Mara or Sopel would do, we don't need to guarantee them a top-6 spot like we would have to do for a Hannan.

Our biggest improvment will come from a full season of DD, MaxPac and Markov along with bounce back performances from Plekanec, Cammalleri and Gomez... Let's just hope that Gomez can pull a Kovalev and come back strong after a terrible year!

Phoenix should take that and run. Giving up the 2012 1st round pick is huge. But, I'd like to see Turris in Montreal so he can develop better than in Phoenix.

Anyways, to answer the OP, my final move would be to trade for either Edmonton, Colorado, Florida or NYI'S 1st round 2013 pick = Nathan MacKinnon.

Throwing this out there...

Kyle Wellwood as our 4th line center? As offensive flair, speed, good on faceoffs and has NHL experience.

Between Moen and White? Could round the lines capabilities well, no?

Would've taken O'Brien at $1.1M. Alas.

Wellwood... maybe I'm too conditioned by his reputation, and maybe he has changed his game somewhat... but I think he's basically the last kind of bottom-6 player we'd want. Small, soft, not too quick, and if he has any reputation on faceoffs, it can't be with very impressive opposition or in very tough situations?
