I think he meant when he turned pro in the AHL someone had #15. So his pro success came when he wore #51.
Ya, I'm leaning more towards that explanation as well now. I just can't imagine Cole at this point in the summer caring enough to stake a claim on the number 15. Wondering if he might even buy Gorges dinner to get 26 from him.
Well, Halpern wore 15 last year, but he's gone, so either Budaj or Cole would likely have taken the number.
That's an unlikely number for a goaltender. At one time 15 was worn by a talented forward named Bobby Rousseau, who for a while played RW on a line with Henri Richard and Gilles Tremblay. They were fast and moved the puck well. Rousseau was a playmaker along with Richard and Tremblay was the checker. Late in his career Rousseau manned the right point on the Rangers PP. He was shy and Derek Sanderson remarked that he reminded him of Inspector Clouseau. By the way, Gilles Tremblay (not to be confused with J.-C. Tremblay) was an excellent defensive forward and had a scoring touch as well. His career was cut short by chronic bronchitis (I guess he was a amoker) and became a radio color commentator for the Habs. I'd rate Tremblay as one of best defensive LWs the Habs ever had, along with Bob Gainey (of course) and Bert Olmstead. In the 1960s he played on a line with Jean Béliveau and Claude Provost when the Habs faced the Blackhawks and they did a good job in neutralizing Stan Mikita's line (notice that after the Hawks won the Cup in 1961, the year after Maurice Richard retired, they didn't win another until 2010). Just before the Original Six expanded to 12 teams that Chicago team was loaded with scorers, including Mikita, Bobby Hull, Ken Hodge, Fred Stanfield, and Phil Esposiito. We all know about the moronic trade that sent Hull, Hodge, and Stanfield to the Bruins.
Stay on topic. You guys want to discuss Gomez taking #11, head over to the Gomez thread.
I don't think anyone went off topic. This thread is about switching #'s. Somebody just mentioned that they hope Desharnais' performance doesn't follow suit with the last Hab to switch #'s. Maybe it's just me but I thought the Gomez comment flowed very nicely with the topic of this thread.
