Just watched the whole thing. Loved that they said with the new Comcast/Versus/NBC deal that they're trying to make national TV games more fair. I'll watch any hockey but it's hard to get excited when pretty much the only teams that are on are the Hawks, Wings, Rangers, Caps, Pens and Flyers where my feelings range from hate to indifference.

Looking forward to more Preds games on TV because sometimes online feeds are choppy and grainy and not even worth watching.

I'm sorry, I had a really hard time hearing what the various management said, maybe because of the microphone system?

I sure hope this is the case! Seems like Poile is banking on too many variables. For example, players filing for arbitration and not signing with their respective teams, veteran UFAs that want another "kick at the can", or Radulov. Crossing my fingers.

Said all the dealing are done with Brett Wilson, just waiting to get approved.

Poile said there were four players ready to make the jump this year: Josi, Ellis, Bourque, and Craig Smith. Every time Poile mentioned Ellis, he got a twinkle in his eye. Poile tried to convince Smith that he should skip college and come play for the Preds THIS year.

I certainly agree with banking on getting Rads back. I'll believe it when I see it. Personally, if I'm Poile, I don't go out of my way to make space for him on the roster. If he decides to come, we can make space. Otherwise, just plan on one of the regulars or newcomers playing that spot.

As far as the arbitration thing goes, I actually think that is the smart way to go in this case. Too many UFAs were going for way more than they were worth...I'm not sorry that the Preds didn't get in on that. There could be a very good opportunity for us towards the beginning of the season as the arbitration hearings come around (hopefully not Weber's!). We could be in a good position to not overspend on a good player. We'll just have to wait and see.

Poile made no promises as far as acquiring anyone, though, so I think it would have to just turn out to be the right situation. Personally, I don't think it's a bad move to sit back and wait.

Poile has said repeatedly that we will spend more than we did last year.

But that doesnt mean we will spend to the midpoint

What exactly was the midpoint last year, and how far are we from that number now??

If we exceed last years midpoint just be signing weber Im gonna be bummed.

But if we are say, 10 million short of what we spent last year, then poile has to be thinking of bringing someone else in besides just re-signing Shea

Midpoint last year was $51.4M. We're a little over $41M right now, midpoint this year is $56.3M. Last year's payroll was almost $51M.

we're probably going to have to sink 7 or 8 into Shea, that'll get us to the Cap Floor

For the Preds to go over last year's budget they would have to spend 10+ million dollars, that's more than Weber.

Im counting bodies, not necessarily generating lines:

Erat-Fisher-Hornqvist
Halischuk-Smithson-Tootoo
Bergfors-Legwand-Spaling
SK-Oreilly-Wilson
Geoffrion

Weber-Suter
Klein-Blum
Laakso-Lebda
Bouillon(IR)

Rinne
Lindback

plenty of room to sign Weber for 7 mil, and add a 4 or 5 million dollar forward and bump geoffrion back to Milwaukee

identifying and obtaining that 4-5 million dollar forward is the problem...

If you have Ellis on that list, you may as well have Josi. He has a higher chance in starting from i have heard. I dont see Lebda playing

So is geoffrion a "ready now" kinda guy or a "still needs a bit of seasoning" type?

hes a "can play now but might benefit from some top line time in the AHL if we have plenty of good players here already" type.

Agreed. I would think he's a more "Guy you put in Milwaukee for depth when you trade for a goal scoring forward." guy.

Meh. Geoffrion is a third line center ready to play in this league now. I understand having him back in Milwuakee if he is slated for fourth line duties, but Halishuk and Geoffrion are definitely ready for the show/10+ minutes a night.

Just occurred to me that Poile's quote could be read as the total spend for the year will be more than last year. That could mean a big splash at the trade deadline for a high end player(s). That would add the payroll to get us over last year, wouldn't it?

would be hard to be that confident in advance. I mean, God forbid it happen, but what if we are sellers not buyers? How screwed would it be if we wanted to be sellers and couldnt because if we dumped someone we'd be below the floor???

I actually do remember hearing him say in the paper a while ago after the Lombardi trade that this room isn't necessarily going to be spent right away. If the right deal doesn't present itself during the summer, then a mid season trade would be likely.

I basically agree with him though. As much as we need a top-sixer, we don't need to be trading for someone who isn't a good fit.

My friend and I both commented about that, along with the HORRIBLE system they used on the plaza just before the unveiling. When you have "non communications pros" using microphones, the "pros" need to be ready for any type of these problems; how many who were there last night heard Mr. Ciggaran's speech about the wings being known for their red color, the vols for their orange, and now the PREDS for their gold?? If I didn't strain to listen, I wouldn't have caught any of that, and I'm sure the team wanted everyone to hear it. Hopefully such problems aren't going to continue into the season.
