Sauer, Del Zotto (and Eminger and Drury) miss the net a lot

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=371723

Among NHL defenseman last season, Steve Eminger had the 12th highest missed shot percentage at 42.5% missed shots aimed at the net. Michael Del Zotto was 14th at 42%, Michael Sauer at 40%. I don't find the Sauer number that alarming, but Del Zotto needs to figure his stuff out.

Also notable, Bryan McCabe finished 3rd lowest among NHL defenseman at 19.7%, and Matt Gilroy made the top 25 at #9 with 21.9% missed shots.

Drury missed the net 39.5% of the time, ranking 3rd highest in the NHL for forwards.

Prospal was 15th lowest at missing the net among forwards, at 16.4%. He had 61 shots, too.

I think we all knew DZ missed the net a lot Every time he had a great chance he would shoot it over the net.

dunno but Higgins didn't make the list.

I know we all knew Del Zotto missed a lot, but I don't think we all thought it was as bad as 40 percent.

I was most surprised to see Matt Gilroy had one of the better percentages in the league.

Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics. A guy like Gomez hits the net a lot more often, but what does that mean when 99% of those shots are directly into the goalies chest?

That's hilarious.

With that said TSN is desperate to find things to talk about.

Are those numbers taking into consideration of shots taken ment to riqochette off the back boards to get a goalie moving?

I'm pretty sure I saw someone on our blue line using that stratagy last season to get the goalie moving and the guy in the slot a low rebound shot or stuff in.

A lot of defensemen do this, and I doubt they consider this into the equation. But still, the Rangers in general are notorious for missing the net.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I feel like thats a Dan Girardi move.

Sauer was doing it quite a bit as well last season IIRC.

I mean, the stats are taken with a grain of salt but it's pretty significant to miss the net that much if you're an offensive defenseman.

The article says shots meant to hit the net. I'm not sure how precise it is or what the cutoff is, but I would assume they try not to count those shots.

So TSN knows what the point man is aiming for? Did they interview them for this poll to figure out what they were doing on every shot?

A shot from the point has a better chance of going in if it's hits someone, is deflected or goes through a screen. Those things happen mostly when you aren't aiming for the goalies chest. So I'm actually happy that some NYR defenseman are low because it possibly means the coaches are instructing them to aim for those things rather than just right at the goalie.

Surprised Scott Gomez isn't in the most accurate shooters. You know, cos he shoots it directly into a goalie's chest each time.

It's usually pretty easy to tell when a guy is trying to hit the boards behind the net.

And I don't know that TSN is even the one that keeps the stats. Not sure what all the irrational hate for TSN is here...

That was my first reaction as well. Counting them as such would mean that Sauer being so high on the list would make sense as well, because I definitely noticed him doing that last year. It's a move that Marc Staal does pretty well, so I wouldn't be surprised if Sauer sees it as a useful skill to hone.

It's definitely something Paul Mara taught the guys that were on the blueline when he was on the roster that stuck.
