Columbus-Washington

Jackets get: Jeff Schultz

Caps get: 2012 3rd round pick
Kris Russell

Caps free up $1.45 million. Jackets get a better looking defense group. Thoughts?

This seems like a fair proposal - don't know if CBJ fans do it though.

Well maybe the 3rd becomes a 4th, with Russell there, would make it more fair. I personally am not a fan of Russell.

I frankly wouldn't. Nothing really against Schultz per se, but I don't think he'd do very well under Arniel.

As mentioned, Caps aren't hurting to shed salary. Poti to LTIR makes the team cap compliant.

I'm not opposed to trading Jeff Schultz, but this return wouldn't really help the Caps. Russell would end up as the #7 in DC given our pairings. Would rather have somewhat similar defensemen in McNeill and Orlov have that depth spot for an offensive/puck-moving defenseman than Russel, given that they are half his cost and Orlov is waiver-exempt.

Schultz is movable, but only if we get another guy who can fill his role or free up enough cap space to sign one (such as Scott Hannan). This deal would likely be closer to working if you left out Russell and just increased the pick.
Grant Clitsome is also intriguing if you're willing to part with him. Not sure the specifics of a Schultz-Clitsome deal, though.

Try actually learning the scenario rather than blindly following Capgeek. Tom Poti will likely spend a very significant portion of the season, if not the whole season or even the rest of his career, on LTIR. That allows the Caps to exceed the salary cap by up to 2.875M. Troy Brouwer may also start the season on LTIR.

Clitsome really isn't easily available; we desperately need the skillset he was showing last year, and are hoping he continues to show it.

Oh well.

How about Schultz for Chaput
Columbus seem to be stacked going down the middle
With the money the Caps save hopefully they could re-sign Hannan.

The Caps D gets better now re-signs Hannan
and
The Caps get a center with some size for the future
