The players and the team philosophy is what won us those cups, not draconian business practices. The policies sucked then and they suck even worse now.
But winning is done because of hockey related matters. Lou should let the business, marketing, and fan relations for everyone else. Because opening the organization up to the players won't effect the team's W-L record at all. Lou's decisions with the people who play hockey is what wins.
Occasionally the scouting staff just drafts a random guy in the middle rounds. I've never understood it either.
It`s either their guy (in particular round) was already taken (aka. crapshoot, USNDPT the main reason why he was taken > others?) or they believe he could be a good role player, i.e. safe pick with not much upside.
