If its get to arbitration, who will present the Rangers case? Hope handled those presentations. Gorton isn't a lawyer.

5 years/$21.25M/$4.25M

$3.75M
$4M
$4.5M
$4.5M
$4.5M
Doesn't have to be a lawyer.

Could be anyone in the Org.

I mean, It's obviously not going to be any of the coaches, but Sather, Gorton, Schoney.

They can all present the Rangers argument.

The case is a matter of "Here's what we think you are worth, and here's why"

If Mike Milbury can do it, anyone can.

He made Salo cry

While it doesn't have to be a lawyer, arbitration is essentially a private court proceeding. The Rangers would be quite stupid to not have someone trained in advocacy presenting their case. Dubinsky will certainly have a lawyer presenting his case.

I'm sure there's plenty of employees with a J.D. sitting around MSG's offices, not to mention whatever outside counsel is on retainer.

Hopefully it doesn't come to arbitration, but as the saying goes, anyone who attempts to defend himself "has a fool for a client."

Hope represented the Rangers in arbitration cases. He left the organization on July 1. Someone with a legal background needs to prepare the Rangers brief. The player usually has the agent who most of the time is a lawyer or a lawyer from the NHLPA presents the case for the player.

Indeed. Dubinsky's agent has a J.D. from the University of Denver.

Callahan. Ladd contract. 5 years. $22M. $4M(arbitration year)and then $4.5M per for the next 4 years(all group IIi years.). Fleischmann got $4.5M per as a group III. Same number for Cole and Laich. Callahan is a better player than those guys.

Just an FYI, pretty much all agents have to have a law degree to be certified agents with pro leagues.

Player agent Ian Pulver used to work for the PA and he would help the player side in arbitration hearings. Rick Olczyk handles Edmonton's CBA administration issues. I believe he was a former NHLPA attorney. Dean Lombardi hired Jeff Solomon who was a former agent. He sold his firm to Octagon and his business partner Ben Hankinson was retained in the sale. Solomon is LAs CBA guy. When the Rangers wanted a compensation pick for Cherepanov,Hope presented the Rangers case to the NHL GMs who voted for the one time exception.

Many do for practical purposes, but it is not a requirement in the NHL. If you go through the list on the NHLPA website you'll see that a significant minority do not (although they often have a different graduate degree, such as an MBA).

Geez. Time is growing short. Need to get Dubinsky locked in immediately. I really want him on a long term contract.

The arbitration hearings are scheduled for 9am. The parties have to be in Toronto on Wednesday. Prepare for the hearing. Unless they fly to Toronto to hammer out the deal face to face, Overhardt did that two years ago. Flying into NY and to meet with Sather and Hope. No agreement was reached. Flew back to Denver and deal was reached a week later.

Dubinsky will re-sign today(Hopefully).

Wish it was other way around. Dubi seems stingier.

Yea, thats it. Callahan got handed 2.3M per on a silver platter 2 years ago. Its not going to be that easy this time around.

Sather played hardball with Dubinsky, and they settled on a number that was fair for both parties.

It has nothing to do with being stingy, its a negotiation.

Callahan had arbitration rights. Only reason he got more. Dubinsky got standard issue Rangers second contract.

If dubinsky hasnt been signed yet, hes not going to.

Where are all the posters who bashed me for saying arbitration would be the end of Dubinsky. Lets enjoy his final 2 years as a Ranger.

In my honest opinion, never thought I'd say this but if Dubi does go to arbitration, I don't see him lasting more than a year before being traded

Yeah, ok. You were bashed because you overreacted. You didn't say that arbitration would be the end of Dubinsky. You criticized Dubinsky for electing arbitration. Him electing arbitration was a good thing, whether you understand that or not. I get that you're still pissed at him over the holdout, but at some point you need to get over it.

Why is that? Because he is trying to get as much money for himself as the system allows? The reality is what for us is a sport/passion/enjoyment is a business, and as such the players need to fight for their rights, just as you would at an annual review at your job.
