I don't know how they select them exactly.....but it is usually someone who is in the news recently. I have checked there often to see if the new CBA has been posted yet. Usually the guy who is the player of the day is someone who just got traded or just signed a big contract.

I don't know about in the past. But in the new NHL players get bonus money for winning awards. So that's nothing to complain about.
