Michigan Sports Talk Thread

Back for more!!

For n00bs, here is a brief topical listing of recent discussions:

Jim Leyland is a lousy manager
Brandon Inge is a lousy 3rd baseman (with ugly arm tattoos)
Dave Dombrowski is a lousy GM and will perpetually regret trading Scott Sizemore
I hate Don Kelly
U-M football sucks
MSU football sucks
Notre Dame football sucks (not Michigan sports, but somehow it ends up here, so why not...)
Ohio State football sucks (see above)
Detroit Lions Football - WHY CAN'T I QUIT YOU??!?!
Joe Dumars is a lousy GM
Miguel Cabrera should stick to hitting and lay off the booze
Wait, did we really trade Chauncey for Allen Iverson?
Lynn Henning is way too excited about the Tigers' prospects
Lynn Henning has a bizarre fascination with Casper Wells' muscly physique (it seems like Malik has the same thing with Travis Ehrhardt, by the way)
Did the Tigers ruin Rick Porcello?
Still mad about Darko
And many more...click the link below if you're really curious:

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=602029

I'm not commenting on the validity of any of these arguments, I'm just presenting them here for reference in the new thread.....well ok, I'll say that the Inge one is definitely valid....

Buster Olney is reporting that the Tigers might be looking at Jimenez:

Quote:
The Tigers are being aggressive right now in asking about pitching -- and they're checking on high-end guys, not just the third-tier guys.
Quote:
The Tigers had two scouts at the Colorado game last night. Speculation from other scouts -- SPECULATION--is that they were watching Jimenez.

If we can get Jimenez without giving up Turner or Castellanos, do it! Do it now!

/endAhnild

Seriously, those are the only two prospects that should be off-limits. And Cabrera and Verlander should be the only two rostered players off-limits. This team badly needs a #2 starter, so get it done Kenny!

I'd be okay with moving Oliver, as I think he's a back of the rotation guy (if he remains a starter). I hang onto Turner, though.

Guillen has been a pleasant surprise since coming back...hitting .400 with a dinger and 3 rabbis. They needed an offensive improvement at either 2B or 3B...and Guillen has looked pretty sharp in the field as well.

Below throws tonight...probably a stop-gap option but he's had decent numbers in Toledo. I'd like see them add another starter since the Coke experiment went flat (see what I there?) and hopefully Coke moving back to the pen gives them a quality lefty in the setup role. They can probably get away with not adding another bat but I'd love to see a 3B/utility guy added.

Betemit in, Inge down to Toledo

http://www.freep.com/article/2011072...ws|text|Sports

Inge is an utter disaster...when his glove goes, he's got no reason to ever see the field. Betemit is a decent plug for the time being.

Kinda cool that Inge accepted the designation and will report to Toledo. He only wants to play for the Tigers, as it is "his team." I appreciate that sentiment.

The Inge love has always puzzled me. Ozzie was a whipping boy with the fanbase and the pro-Ozzie crowd come to his defense every time but the guy went to win 3 titles and 401 games. What the hell has Brandon Inge done to warrant his prince like status? He's a likeable enough guy but this is baseball, not a sitcom. If you can't hit your own weight, find another job.

Hey man, Cecil Fielder wasn't held to that standard!

True...neither was Rob Deer.

Eh, Cecil was a .258 hitter as a Tiger...how fat was he? Rob Deer .212 as a Tiger...weighed about 210.

Good move. I was a proponent of giving Inge a chance after coming off the DL and am glad he got it, but he's done nothing since.

Where art thou, Nick Castellanos?

Big Cecil was easily over 260. Guy was huge, and not Hulk Hogan type big.

Also, funny thing about Rob Deer, guy is now a hitting instructor for the Padres.

I think it's the same thing that garnered Mike Maroth his fans (and, I admit, I didn't mind the guy - knew he wasn't very good, but still pulled for him) - he weathered that godawful 119 loss season and appeared to work hard every time he was out there - despite the whining about being pushed behind the plate early on. Having weathered that storm, and sticking with us, I think it gave him a lot of leeway with fans and maybe management, as well. This year, the wheels fell off entirely and, to the Tigers credit, made a move to shore up the position.

I'm hoping the Lions are huge players in FA this week, hell, if Stafford can stay healthy....they might actually have a shot at the playoffs this year...

A little buzz around Jacob Turner...

Jon Heyman reports that he's been called up and Jason Beck says he won't start for Erie on Saturday and the Tigers have yet to comment. I haven't seen a link showing he has been called up but I wonder if he'll start today since Verlander starts tomorrow and the deadline is Monday. Turner may be getting showcased...and supposedly Ubaldo is not out of the question (per Heyman).

Turner is going to start today (per Danny Knobler on MLB.com) and Fister may be the guy the Tigers will get before the deadline. And I happen to be going to the game today...looking forward to seeing Turner instead of Below.

I thought we were out of the Ubaldo sweepstakes and that Colorado was pushing harder on NY?BoSox. Of course, they might just be trying to drive up the price (which was rumored to be pretty high as it was). Part of me hopes Turner looks good today, but another part of me is leery of who DD will ship him out for (in a package for Ubaldo, maybe, for the other guys rumored to be on the market? Not so much). Have a good time at the game, Shoalzie!
