I found it annoying and refreshing at the same time that Osgood said that he'd have signed for this year (basically lying about his health to get a contract) to get that 400th win. I remember saying that in posts last year prior to him winning #400.
I like the honesty and know he's been a great team player over the years. You have to be a bit selfish to be a very good player in this league but he had to have known he's hurt the team last year and would've hurt the team this year since his body would've broken down by December. So good on him for realizing he's achieved his goals and it's time to bow out.
In the same article where he talks about the team winning, and saying some other guy is a jerk, he readily admits that had he not won #400, he would have come back. The honesty is refreshing, but he just admitted that he would have put himself and his record above team needs. The only thing that prevented this was that he reached some arbitrary number. Does it really matter or change his legacy if he had won 398?
Edit: Correction. Not sure if it was the same article, or one of the others that KK's site had about his retirement.
Ozzie looks over at me and says, "We won the Stanley Cup. We, the Detroit Red Wings, won the Cup. Each one of us in that room made a contribution. We won because we are a team.
"So what happens right after we win?"
I reply, "I don't know. What?"
"He (teammate) goes on TV and says that he played hurt during the playoffs, that's why his numbers were not very good," Osgood says. "What a self-centered jerk."
For the next 30 minutes, Ozzie railed on this teammate, saying over and over that instead of pointing out that he played injured, he should have lauded the players who stepped up.
"That's what a teammate does," Osgood says. "What a phony."
Can someone tell me why Ozzie should be mad at someone who said he played hurt? You know, when I was a kid, I used to get mad at people who would make vulgar jokes about women. lol I was such a sweetheart. (not that I make such jokes now) Is this case similar or something totally different? Did Ozzie take this 'teammate' thing bit too serious or something I'm missing?
Anyways as far as I'm concerned, it water under the bridge. Nothing to fret about especially considering that Ozzie just retired. Though it would be fun figuring out who that person might be. Cuz that's what fans do.
Are you risking a heat stroke and going to the art fair? I went for a couple hours yesterday AM. I'm not going to bother going outside today, if it can be avoided.
I thought about going myself...til I tried to drive back from work through downtown Ann Arbor, and realized that spending hours in that maze of tents to the tune of 105 degrees or so...not my brand of vodka.
