Not necessarily. It's targeted writing because you're writing for a specific audience. It's basic web publishing principles: Just because 3% of your visitors are non-regional doesn't mean you should invest the time needed to cater to them.

Thousands of people visit sites for Pittsburgh based news outlets (Trib, Post-Gazette, KDKA, etc) and I'm sure 99% of visitors realize when they say "Oakland" they aren't talking about California.

Not really...it won't ruin my weekend

I just believe that clarity in writing is important, particular for journalists. The article may be aimed at locals who know that Greece is a neighborhood of Rochester, but if it's on the internet, you have no idea how many non-locals will be reading it. Better to be clear, IMO.

And I thought threads about salary arbitration couldn't get any more boring.

You guys never cease to surpass my expectations!

Does anyone think Cally gets done before Wednesday night?

I'm still worried about this. His agents comments freak me the hell out.

If it gets to arbitration, next offseason is going to suck.

I think there's about a 90% chance that this gets done before the arbitration hearing.

It will get done. There's more than enough comparables to base his contract on.

I'd be shocked if it actually got to arbitration.

Callahan avoided arbitration when he signed his prior contract, as well.

He will also become captain of an original 6 team. What's there not to like?
Just simply happy as i read this! We don´t have to wait until his hearing because he and the club don´t want to waiste so much time. So I think he´ll get his longterm contract (expect 4-6 years) in the next few days.

I have to disagree here--the writer is writing for his target audience. This is not a national newpapater and while I'm sure it has influence within its region, you are talking about a sports story about a local kid. The writer knows that the "local kid done good" is the main story here.

From what I've learned in school as a journalist student, you write to your target audience. That news source is clearly targeted at the local population, so they don't need to specify a location, since it's pretty obvious what they are talking about.

Dubinsky and Callahan have discussed their contract situations

Quote:
Asked about the negotiations this afternoon, Dubinsky, who was at the Rangers’ practice facility earlier in the day after leaving Toronto Thursday afternoon, said he always expected a deal to get done, even if it did come down to the last second. Here’s how Dubinsky’s new contract may help Ryan Callahan, with some comments from Callahan’s agent Steve Bartlett. Dubinsky said he and Callahan are close enough, both as teammates and friends, that they couldn’t help but discuss how their contract negotiations were/are going with each other. “We’re pretty open with each other,” Dubinsky said.

And for what it's worth, Kevin Oklobzija is probably one of if not the best non-NHL hockey writers in the country. He's an excellent journalist.

This makes me feel very good/confident that a long-term deal will get done shortly (no pun intended) with Callahan. The fact that he and Dubinsky are very good friends gives me confidence that Callahan wants to be here with Dubinsky. Cally doesn't want arbitration and I think he signs rather quickly.
