My French is quite minimal, i'm taking a huge leap of faith that I can get by with very little knowledge of the language. I am willing to try and learn it but that can only get me so far. The price of rent isn't that big of a deal as long as it is reasonable somewhat.
I live 30 steps from McGill in the Ghetto on Milton. I pay $700 but I know a lot of people that live close that pay $350-500 for a decent place. If you are concerned about French than live in the Ghetto because its all English kids. Plus it's very central. If you want to challenge your language abilities I'd live further away from McGill
Man, Montreal is just a wonderful city. So excited to live here.
Glad you're enjoying it...it really is an amazing city.
Two weeks until I only have 3 classes remaining...really think about doing all three at night this fall while working full time just to get my degree. Not willing to wait until next Winter to finish.
Yeah, Vendome looks like it could be a pretty easy place to hurt someone at night. I've only been there between 8:00AM to 6:00PM, so I can't judge what happens when it gets dark.
For that matter, it's surprising how Angrignon is safe. Station is in the middle of a forest pretty much, and it border LaSalle and Verdun, two areas that can get sketch.
To be honest, bad stuff can happen anywhere (not to say that Montreal is a dangerous city - however, I've heard of isolated incidents everywhere). As long as you're not in Montreal East, you should be alright.

I am so ****ed, as it stands. Just found out who my teachers are for the upcoming term (JMSB).
COMM 210 - Got Dostaler. Could be worse. Lituchy's the only other viable option (I refuse to take a class that goes into the night, I actually do want to watch the Habs ). But there is someone else: Rami Matta. Only bummer is his class is on Saturday from 10 to 1. I'm leaning towards taking him and having both Thursday and Friday off.
COMM 212 - Cooperberg for this one. I'm not sure what to think, I've read she's a mixed bag. Medicoff, Errunza, and Michel are the other choices that I can switch to. Medicoff is, by all accounts, a total joke, as is Michel. So that leaves Erunza and Cooperberg.
COMM 215 - I ended up with Buyukkurt, and she doesn't allow laptops. From all accounts, she (and all the others) are terrible. I'm seriously leaning towards taking Nebebe's online class just so I don't have to deal with these fools and I get to keep everything electronic (which is a big deal for me). Other than that, there's Kermani and Bayne.
Last class is DESC 200 with Vahidov, my only break so far.

Any advice to share?
I had Cooperberg for 212 - she's not bad, but not great. gets impatient at times..
How much do you guys figure is a fair estimate for first year books?
Nearly a thousand dollars if you buy them all new.
I recommend buying used whenever possible, or possibly not buying them and hanging out at the library. This may not be obvious to an 18 year old, but there is absolutely no benefit to a newer addition. The material taught in introductory courses doesn't change rapidly at all. They do move around the contents a little and change the page numbers to make it look different.

That's how much I budgeted out, just figured I'd double-check thanks
I'll see if I can snag some used ones off Amazon first, if not I'll have to go new.
That doesn't sound too bad. Is she one of those "never take again" types for you?
No, she was fine. I just had a problem with how the course was organized - 7 of 13 classes were spent on orals, and we had to go through the last 8 chapters in the last class.
Get the question bank for the final, which is all MC, because it'll help you big.

Where would I find the question bank? (pardon my noobiness).
