this was just posted in another thread so apparently I'm not the only one who thinks this is the case
Some people, including me, think that Betts is done at centre due to his injuries to his shoulder. Holmstrom has been likened to him, can PK, and can win face-offs.
People putting Holmstrom above Betts on the 4th line? Why?
He can PK, win faceoffs, and brings grit to the lineup. Only thing team will lose with Betts is experience and some leadership. Holmstrom's a better choice.

Before we acclaim Holmstrom as Betts' successor, let's remember that he has a princely total of 2 NHL games under his belt. I'm fine with giving him a look, but your post needs a whole lot of qualifiers like "may", "has the potential to", "projects to", etc.

He will most likely PK, may win more faceoffs than Betts and his bum shoulders/wrists, and will bring grit to the lineup.
I think that Blair Betts should at least get a shot to maintain his position, he was one of the more consistent players last season.
He was consistently mediocre. I think having slow-as-molasses Shelley on his line didn't exactly help. I'd like to see Holmgren sign a true third line player (a la Chris Drury) to play with Schenn and Simmonds so that Talbot can join Betts and Nodl on the fourth line. Shelley is just too slow to play a regular NHL shift. His hockey sense is nearly non-existent, he loses most of his fights, and he can't keep up with the pace of the game at age 35.
That said, some of you guys are getting way too excited about Holmstrom. He could be a solid fourth liner someday, but he's not going to step into the fourth line role next season and be nearly as effective as Blair Betts. How many teams can you name that employ a rookie as their fourth line center?

cheap one year deal would be great. if he could stay healthy the flyers would have pretty darn good pk next season.
and as far as betts i think the main concern is that his shoulders maybe shot. This would mainly effect his faceoffs so I say put him on wing and let talbot center the 4th line. holmstrom only has 1 yr playing pro so i think another year would benefit him greatly but if he shows in camp to be the better option then absolutely give him a shot.

How bad was his knee injury? Is it a chronic thing or the only time he had an injury to it?

Pretty serious from what I understand. Not really sure if it's chronic or not but last I heard his career was in doubt last year. The only way I think signing him is a good idea is if he takes a serious pay cut for 1 yr.

If he's too slow and beaten up then don't sign him but maybe a camp invite to see what he's got left. If he can still contribute to the team and is a better option then some of the youngs I say give him a shot as long as the contract numbers are right. That sure is a lot of "ifs" though. In the end I think the team we have now is pretty good too.
Betts should be challenged by some of the prospects - just like any other roster player.
I'm all for someone younger, more healthy stepping up and EARNING that spot over the course of the next season. I doubt they start the season with 3C and 4C both filled by Rookies.
